Okay. Why do I have no option to install the netflix app from the 'tv/video services' on my ps3? Why do I only have Iplayer, ITV player, 4OD and Mubi? Why is it not in the 'what's new?' section? Why is it not in the PS3 store?

Also their customer support telephone number doesn't work.

I didn't even realise they had released it for XBOX360 but it was the first thing I saw when I turned it on. The choice is worse than Lovefilm at the minute but it should get better.

Many people I've heard say it's better than lovefilm and it does HD streaming. On mine at the minute it does nothing as it doesn't appear anywhere.

However on the homepage of the site it shows more good stuff available and the TV stuff looks very good. I can't really justify the cost of it though. I already get Lovefilm for 11 quid a month for games and I get the streaming free with that, which is nice to have on my XBOX except for the TV stuff missing from it.

It does 720p streaming for a limited selection of films, with only stereo sound...

I don't know what MUBI is. It seems weird.

To be fair, I've reverted to stereo for a while and I'm not missing the surround.

The bass however... that I miss.

In the real world I'm not watching a screen in front of me. Even stereo effects aren't needed. Mono sound for films pls.

In fact why bother with sound at all? Let's get back to the silent era, The Artist proves it still works.

I hd the same problem with iplayer not appearing. I'm not sure I remember what I did to fix it, but I think it involved basically installing the playtv demo (and then uninstalling)

If you don't have the Netflix app on your PS3, install Home and that will fix it.

Register your Netflix account, log in and marvel at how much better it is than shitty Lovefilm.

Then register an account (or at least a week long trial) with http://www.unblock-us.com. Change the DNS settings on your PS3* to the ones the site offers.

Log back in to your Netflix account and then notice that you now have access to the US Netflix catalogue...

Want the UK catalogue? Just change the DNS settings back.


*You can also can change the DNS settings on your router (in fact, this was the only way I could get it to work).

Here's what I did to get it to work - reset PS3 to default settings. Then it appeared no problem.

And that didn't work for me. Installing Home did.

I signed up for a month free trial and was very disappointed in the selection, especially TV.

Take Dexter for example, Season 6 has just finished in the US, NetFlix have S1 and 2. They only had 5 or 6 seasons of South Park and most other shows where the same (if they were there at all)

Love Film had more content (although not necessarily better).

Don’t think these will take off until the movie companies and TV channels slacken their grip. SKY are spending 1.6 billion a year on content including US shows and will want their money’s worth.

I also read that in the US Netflix had a discounted rate on Sony films, once they hit over a certain number of subscribers Sony put the price up which was passed onto the subscribers and many left.

I've read that using a service like http://www.unblock-us.com/ to pretend you're in the States gives you a positively ludicrous amount of content in Netflix compared to the UK version.

Is it good enough to ditch sky?

No. Netflix content is older shows and movies, not current stuff. Come on, it's half the price of Sky's HD fee and 1/3rd the price of a basi channel pack; did you really think it would be competitive?

I had hoped it would be, a couple of expats I work with from the US are always talking about Netflix. One of them has some complex VPN via his sister’s house in the US (he is in charge of networks at my company) so that he can use US Netflix in Europe.

I guess I thought we would get the same content etc, bit naive on reflection!

It’s a shame as this service is the future, in another 2 years a lot more people will be on 100MB links (If BT Infinity are to be believed) so this sort of service could take off.

This is what I do, albeit I pay a modest fee to a commercial VPN service as I have no handy US endpoint. It's not that complex.

I tried using unblockUS to access US netflix. Just requires a DNS change on the PS3. It was a free trial for a week but still works for some reason. Unblock US is meant to cost £5 a month.

No, I didnt think it would be competitive in a current sense, I just hoped it would be competitive in a library sense. I would be more than happy to be watching, for example, season 2 of The Walking Dead on Netflix if they were only up to season 3 on Sky. I don't mind watching stuff 6m-12m after Sky if it will save me £50 a month.

Allow me to assure you that the media firms have done the same maths, have come to the same conclusions, and have zero intent of letting you off the hook for £50/mo.

I would have no problem with paying £50 or more a month for ad free content that was available on US broadcast dates.

I use the newsgroup for all my content, but it’s not free, I just spend my money on a NAS, hard drive upgrades and unlimited broadband and newsgroup accounts as a pose to giving it to movie studios. If I add up what I’ve spent on these over the last 5 years including disk upgrades its will come to £50-£60 a month.

What I would like is a box in my house with say a 2TB drive that I could download hi-def content to via an Infinity or similar speed link. I would be happy to have this content deleted after 30 days automatically, but if I was recording TV like SKY plus then I would expect to be in full control of how long I kept this content.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple start to buy up media companies as they have buckets of money and are getting little cooperation as Sony etc don’t want to play ball. Apple are well placed to bring a media change as they did with music.

3700 words I wrote on why it's not that simple. It might happen eventually -- probably will -- but there's a lot of complexity and nervousness to overcome first.

TV Rage has a page showing which shows are added to Netflix, its not clear if this is just the US though.
