What the Hell?

Is this related to the announcement yesterday that the group planning to burn poppies had been banned? I heard that on PM last night on my way home and don't know the back story or exactly who these people were but I was a bit uncomfortable with it.

On a slightly related note, I was listening to Today this morning and they had an interview with two families who had lost their son in 2009 in the armed forces. I get too emotioanl, I was driving along the motorway wiping away tears!

Dunno, maybe, and I'd agree with that (it's arson, after all). But I think if someone turns up and starts singing, they'll "deal with them".

Anyone trying to stop those observing the silence in a formal silence observing place at the formal silence observing time for the purposes of being a cunt will be arrested for first-degree cuntery. Seems fair to me, they aren't stopping anyone doing anything that's not illegal.

I'll be the first to criticise the police over more or less anything, but not this. It's just to stop mentals ruining the day for everyone else.

If they're deliberately targeting memorial gatherings during the silence then that's wrong and should be dealt with, but if they want to walk down the street whistling or ignore it in their own home then I don't have a problem with it.

Muslims against Crusades were the group. They have been called various things over the years, they keep popping back up. They, like various religious and far left or right groups, take freedom of speech to the point where it is used to radicalise or paramilitarise young people, hence banning. This is done for two reasons - one, to keep them from expanding too much - they'll never shut up and never go away completely, regardless of how free speech is, so that's hardly part of the issue. But regularly disrupt their shenanigans and you'll keep them in their box. Secondly, Britain is full of idiots who think that such organisations represent all of their 'faith'.

Nevertheless, I stick by the Hicks clause on this issue. The poppy is just wood and paper, what matters is what it represents, which is the struggle for the freedom to.... burn the poppy.

The issue isn;t about that though, it's about how if you make a show of interrupting a memorial like today, you're a fucking cunt.

Sing when or where there is not a service - otherwise it's cunty singing. No freedom is being curtailed here, unless you want to argue that it's being curtailed in the .00000000000001% of space/time in any year these things are held.

Besides, get enough radical muslims shooting their gobs off and the EDL turn up. Fuck that.

You know, when there's so many people frothing at the gob about others committing the entirely reasonable act of not wearing a poppy, we've got more important battles to fight than one against the Met for taking their usual po-faced and non-committal approach to communicating with the public about matters upon which they seek to reassure. They're crap at it.... but they seek to keep the peace (as is their original purpose) for once, and god help us if those who feel it should be a case of say whatever whenever get given planning responsibility for the Ulster marches.

A threat to the public? Fuxache.

As if plod didn't have enough credibility issues.

It only has to check the first two, though. Somehow.

Football matches must be a nightmare.

You want them to cherry-pick which bits of the law they uphold even more than they do already?

Apples and oranges, unless you count the Auld Firm. People go to football reasonably expecting abuse, based on years of tradition. People go to the cenotaph expecting silent contemplation, based on the same. Both should be afforded their expected outcomes.

Saying a sentence that makes sense would be a start. Including the word 'not' before 'clearly a threat to public', for example.

Are you doing that Beex thing of responding to what you think people have said, rather than what they actually did? I didn't suggest any such thing.

Saying that being insulting to the memory of some dead people is a "threat to the public" is, indisputably, utter fucking bollocks.

If someone, with intent to cause a person harassment, alarm or distress, is insulting or abusive to that person, then yeah, they've broken the law and I'm not against plod arresting them. But let's not pretend this is a "threat to the public", and let's also not pretend that plod can't be very elastic when it comes to the definitions of those words.

No, there clearly isn't a threat. Someone shouting and being a knobend isn't a "threat".

This is the first time in 20 odd years that I haven't been in the city centre at 11am when the maroons go off on top of the town hall, but someone let them off somewhere near here, which surprised me as we don't have an municipal buildings within a couple of miles.

Tis strange to be at home at this time.

Hadn't seen the BETEO tribute page at 11am before. Nice touch, that.

It broke Space Cows. And due to the stupid time issues, it nearly went off at 10am. I didn't think about it until this morning.

I remember one time someone was on the phone to a customer when the fire alarm went off to signify the start of the two minute silence. He looked confused/worried for about half a second, then just slammed the phone down on them. :D

When I worked in a call centre we were told to warn customers that if we were on the phone at 11am, we would go quiet for 2 minutes.

The one time it happened to me, the bugger hung up after going "Hello? HELLO? Fuck off then!"

Don't answer a call if there's any danger you are going to still be on it at eleven I suppose.

When working in big offices I've always gone to the loo at about five to, and stayed there till five past. Neatly dodges any issues.

Not really an option in most call centres.

Being Canadian has nothing to do with it. Being an ignorant cunt has everything to do with his confusion. "We" have Remembrance Day and wear poppies too. In fact, in an interesting reversal, I was the only person in my office today to stop working at 11am, stand up and observe the silence. Pretty much everyone else carried on work, typing, making/receiving calls. I was NOT impressed by this!

I used to work in a call centre, and we observed the silence. I was on a call at the time, and apologised to the customer that the silence was approaching so he could hold or I would phone him back afterwards. He scoffed, so I hung up on him.

It was pretty well observed here, thanks to the main lights being switched off at 11am so people knew when the silence had started and would stop. One of my colleagues was on a lengthy call to someone prior to it and explained to them that they would have to go but the person on the other end carried on rabbiting away. I'd have been tempted to say 'I'll have to call you back' and hang up on them.

Yeah, the 600+ people here observed it well due to the alarm sounding at the beginning and end. Always a couple of belmers who have to get shushed by their colleagues though.

"57 people arrested in Whitehall in order to "prevent a breach of the peace"" says Sky news

Apparently, it's the EDL?

She's quiet enough for all of us now.
