My friend has BF3 and he pointed out that it's pretty much pointless trying to get into the fast jets now, as they start with cannons, and everyone who has been playing it from day 1 will now have heat seeking missiles so you'll never get the kills to level the planes up. Kinda put me off it.

Best plan is to spot enemies using the planes until you level up enough to get flares. Then it becomes easier to avoid being blown up.

Malia - Not true, you need about 3 kills to level up to flares which negate a lot of the heatseekers which come your way. A handful more kills than that (which are the easily obtainable) and you get your own heatseekers and shortly thereafter it's Stealth time and then the paying field is more or less entirely level.

There are a lot of unlocks in this game, certianly, but they are well enough balanced that you feel like you've earned the essentails without having to grind them for hours. Get the game, jump in your jets, you'll be there in no time.

In fact, you don't even need to get kills - spot a few flying or land enemies, practice your flying skills and tricks, get the odd strafe on for assist points and bob's your uncle. Truly the most stressful thing about jets and copters is the bastard opposition spawncamping your runways and carriers. But that's what squadmates and stinger missiles and AA batteries are for, surely.

All this stuff is in the BF3 thread, mind.

I can't see the combat being anywhere near as good as it is in Dark Souls. Still looks quite floaty from the videos I've seen.

Edge have given it a 9. The combat isn't as good as Dark Souls, which they also gave a 9. Does Zardoz work for Edge?

And don't get me started on them posting their reviews online before the magazine even lands on my doormat. The wankers.

Yeah, not interested in yet another samey military shooter, am interested in this, but my list of current games plus games I want for cheapers and that waiting won't negatively effect it means it might take a while to get. Barrington massive splitting over it thought

The Oblivion Gates where a drag after the 3rd one. And moulding my character so he was a master of sneaking/invisibility just to avoid boring fights and get to the good bits isn't really a good sign, thinking back.

Dark Souls.

Hmm...

Quote:
Skyrim still takes place in a world where a woolly mammoth can suddenly levitate a hundred feet into the sky and stay there. It still takes place in a world where trying to aid the city watch in a battle against a rampaging dragon can see you arrested and taken to prison – before the battle's over, mind – for striking one of the soldiers with a glancing blow. It's still a world where a nobleman will try, repeatedly, to enter a tavern, having forgotten to climb off his horse first. It's a world of clunking animation, of reused voice actors, of bandits talking over their own death throes. It's a world that's entirely engaging one moment and an utter farce the next.

Dark Souls.

I thought that was part of the joy of the Elder Scrolls games...no? Just must be me then (although the City Guard 'issues' can be wearisome, especially as I like to play sneaky, stabby, stealy barstools).

Yeah of course I'll be bumming Skyrim in the face. It's just that Dark Souls has upped the ante since Oblivion.

Skyrim first, then by the time I'm done with that, Dark Souls should be down in price a bit, or it'll be Christmas. Also - the worst thing about Oblivion was the auto-levelling bullshit. Morrowind operated on the sensible premise that the further you got from Seyda Neen, the more difficult your opponents got. Oblivion assumed that people actually enjoyed the combat and therefore made it exactly the same all the way through the game, robbing free-roaming afficionados of the great pleasure of going back to an "easy" area when hugely levelled up and twatting everything in sight with one swing of their sword.
Also: yes, the Oblivion gates were fucking awful and I ended up whacking the difficulty down just so I could get through them as quickly as possible.

In fact, I would argue no game has ever felt as much like a real place, open to exploration, as dark souls.

Game of the year. Probably generation.

Some audio engineer dude on reddit took the pr marketing trailer ripped out the "epic" music and spliced in some music from inception (no not [i]that[\i] music) and it represents how it feels to play the game perfectly.

http://www.vimeo.com/31823836

i would really, really recommend anyone interested in Skyrim to take a chance on it, and give it your full attention for a bit. It will pay of in spades. I don't think I've ever wanted to recommend a game as much since Minecraft.

The Edge review does indeed make it sound awesome. Just not quite as awesome as I now expect from my swords and sorcery games.

Dark Souls.

That trailer is awesome, but even that does nothing to convey the sense of scale and beauty of the seamless game world. It really has to be played to be appreciated. It's one of, if not the most magnificent game world I've ever had the pleasure of running around in.

That trailer is awesome, but even that does nothing to convey the sense of scale and beauty of the seamless game world. It really has to be played to be appreciated. It's one of, if not the most magnificent game world I've ever had the pleasure of running around in.

Hang on, what? How have you got this already?

Don't get me wrong, I'm getting Dark Souls -- but I'm getting Skyrim first.

And a Skeleton made of Skeletons.

And armour that clunks and scrapes with every step.

And Fear.

And so many Dragons.

And the whispers of other players huddled around your campfire, or ringing the church bell, or scrawling a message on the floor.*

And it will make you feel so alone.

*I would argue, like multiplayer games, this single player game needs to played whilst lots of others will still be playing it.

Dark Souls.

Dagnabbit man, I can't play two games at once!
Can I?

Nope you can play one.

Dark Souls.

Case in point: last night I got home from work at 11:30 and wanted to play Dark Souls. But on the walk home I realised I just couldn't. I was too tired. Too weak.

I was scared. The risk too high.

Any other game, ever? Sure. Dark Souls? No, I need to be my best.
