2.) Which domain name types can I register whilst keeping my details private?
3.) Would I own the domain name, or would the registration company own it?

1.) If you're just registering a domain name, any of them.
2.) All of them - just fill in a fake address.
3.) Dunno, but so long as you keep paying the registration fee, you're not going to run into any troubles. Provided you don't buy a trademark and get muscled out by the owners. But that's unlikely these days since they're all registered anyway.

I wouldn't recommend heeding this piece of advice, btw. It's all good fun until the registrar sends you a letter asking you to confirm the details are correct, can't get hold of you and you lose the domain without refund.

.uk domains you can opt-out of the whois if you are a non-trading individual (ie not a company or sole trader). .com/net/biz.org/etc you cannot opt-out, sadly.

The companies are mostly much of a muchness, but some of them charge to transfer out, so I'd be wary of that. I know that 123-reg do not charge if you want to transfer away. I've heard more than my fair share of horror stories from UK2, though, so probably avoid them.

You don't own the domain outright, but you are the registrar. D'Johnie is correct that as long as you keep up your payments and keep them with a reputable registrar, it's one and the same thing essentially.

I've owned all manner of ridiculous speculative domain names (like 30+) for over five years and not once have I had a problem because of this. I guess YMMV.

How do I set up webmail for a domain, once registered, BTW? I remember hearing that there was a way to link GMail to a domain which you own, but I might've been mistaken there.

You can forward it to gmail, yes.

Oh, you can opt-out of the whois for .eu domains. I didn't know that until now because they were only available to pre-register when I worked in the industry.

You need hosting for the email bit - just a domain won't do that. Whoever provides the hosting will manage your webmail for you, and you can usually configure forwarding it to gmail in whatever console they provide.

Just a domain will do email forwarding, I'm sure I have several set up like that, for 1.99 a year or whatever.

You need addresses defined somewhere, surely? Unless you just forward *@mydomain.com

Pretty sure I've got several names @mydomain going to different gmail accounts. Maybe it depends on the provider, I'll double check later.

I've registered a domain for the minecraft server with 123-reg but now I'm a bit lost.

How do I map my ip address to the domain name?

Are you going to be using the 123-reg nameservers or your own? If the 123-reg ones, just go into the DNS section and change the A records to your IP address.

Go to the control panel, go down to web forwarding and put the minecraft server address in the forwarding box, or something like that.

Ah, ok. I think I've found it. There's a surprising amount of terminology used in this game.

Web forwarding is if you want to forward one url to another (and is horrible). If he's got his own server with an IP address, the way to map it is to change the DNS records as I stated above.

So if he's got 123.456.789.012/home/index.html and he amends the A record of the domain to point to that, he'll get http://www.massiveheid.com/index.html.

Ah, well then. Where is the DNS record bit then?

3. Find your domain name and click Manage
4. Click Change Nameservers (DNS)
5. Put your IP in there.

You want to change the @ and www records to your server's IP address (if you want to see http://www.davpaz.com and davpaz.com).

How exactly would it work? He hasn't got a URL to start with... hence wanting to link his domain to the server.

Ok, you try it and see how far you get.

Basically web forwarding is a basic way of forwarding a URL through port 80, so you could forward http://davpaz.blogspot.com to http://www.davpaz.co.uk. You cannot web forward a server IP to a domain as it's backwards. You are pointing the domain to the server IP, not the other way around.

When you amend the A records in the DNS, you are telling the domain to point to the server IP address, which then finds the relevant home account on the server (which you configure on the server directly).

It's true. I tried the web forwarding and it did a very weird thing with a feedback loop.
