I've made her a Cyborg Georgian Lady of Leisure dress.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I've upgraded one of her dresses I found in her wardrobe by adding more RAM, a new CPU and GPU, IDE cables; PCI USB 2.0 Card; and some heatsinks and fans. It's well pro. The velvet; silk and satin set the technology off well.

They'd have got away with it if it hadn't been for that gigantic mirror positioned exactly where it is... bad luck!

Right! Finally caught up on everything (that interests me. And B&B) that Beexed while I was away. Can't remember any of it, though, other than to say well done MaliA and soz Kissyfur. A lot of you were on Twitter anyway, so it's not really like I've been away, other than my tan, gained weight and current sense of ennui at being back.

What does the mirror do? My Nan used to come in and put blankets over the mirrors in my room if there was a storm, but I never knew why (and didn't bother to ask as she almost certainly did so because someone told her to do so, not because she knew an actual reason to do so).

I often deal with the big picture and iron out the smaller details at a later date.

This approach, however, does not work with solo plumbing efforts.

The only reason I can think of right now is that the mirror might reflect the heat right back at the PC and then that makes it worse.

Apparently the lightning can't see the mirror under the blanket so it'll fuck off & set fire someone else's house :o

Mirrors have long been a popular object of old wives tales. One of the more popular old wives tales concerning mirrors is that they should always be covered during a rain or lightning storm. The old wives tale says that if a mirror is not covered during a lightning storm it will attract the lightning and the house will be struck and burned down. For many ages people would quickly cover their mirrors with blankets and sheets at the sight of a rain cloud to prevent their home from being struck down. Others refused to keep mirrors hung in their home, as they didn’t want to have to worry about being away when a storm approached.

Luckily, we now know that mirrors don’t attract lightning as many of us have them in our homes and they have never attracted lightning. Oddly enough, there are still people that observe this old wives tale, just in case!

It will have been, any catastrophic weight loss like that is always mostly water weight. One pound of fat is approximately 3500 kcal, and most people with sedentary jobs and typical exercise patterns are burning 1500-2500 kcal per day. Even if you completely fasted, nil-by-mouth, and still find the energy to live a normal live, you would only expect to burn off between three and five pounds of fat per week.

Fuck, I'm going go-karting in a couple of months and need to be about 9 stone.

I've worked out that I need to drop 42 pounds in that timescale.

I assume I'd have to eat less, and exercise more at a gym.

After having reviewed the time and costs involved with gym stuff, and the fact I can't be bothered, it's more economical for me to work at the minimum wage for the time available and then get the fat sucked out of me.

Old wives are uggos. This is the reason they have no mirrors. And why younger wives is betterer.

Fortunately no one was in the room when it happened - yes the mirror was hit as well. Now the lightning very well may have hit the mirror then hit the PC, or the lightning may have hit the overhead telephone cables, traveled through the few feet of telephone cable directly into the turned on, non surge protected internal modem then hit the mirror. However, I am sure now that if your computer has been reduced to a molten liquid state then it's probably fucked.

I wish someone had had the foresight to take a photo :( The case was burnt and cracked outwards like a bomb had gone off inside it, there were rivers of molten metal running out of the bottom (assuming the modem) and the old CRT's (it was the 90s) screen had smashed. At the start Time refused to replace it under warranty (act of god clause) but the end they caved in, I have a feeling it was just to get the crazy yorkshire middle class housewife to shut the fuck up and leave them alone rather than the rents discovering some legal fine print.

Incredible! The thing is, there's just no way a phone cable can carry that much energy, it will simply be vaporised. Must have taken more of a direct hit somehow.
I've had plenty of phones and modems "blown up" over the years, but there's rarely much in the way of visible damage. Yes, you should have taken a photo :)

I once had a 56K modem destroyed by lightning, back in my Amiga days. It was literally a couple of weeks after I'd bought it, so I took it back to my local computer shop and asked them to replace it.

They refused, saying that if it was lightning damage they couldn't do anything about it. So I lied, and told them that it couldn't be lightning damage because I'd been on holiday for the last week and took it with me, and it'd stopped working over there.

They believed me.

Feels good to get that off my chest!

So the old wives superstition was right? It hit the mirror and bounced back? 8)

So, was Kalmar joking when he said it was because of the large mirror?

I'm more confused, now. I just assumed it was an old wives tale, now I know it is, but also that mirrors can affect lightning and blow stuffs up.

I think the : science: behind that is that lightning is attracted to metal and I would suspect that in ye olden days when people owned stuff made out of wood that a mirror would be a prime target, doubt turning it round would do much good though as the metal is still there.

I was joking but Decca's explanation sort of makes sense. Not that covering it up would help!

Man! It is foggy as hell out there. Coming over Caerphilly Mountain (no streetlights, council turn them off at night) with all my lights on, could see maybe 20 feet ahead.

It was like if they ported Forza to the Magic Carpet engine.

Since when did being homesick become a recognised medical condition? I'm no expert, but if you are homesick, and the one thing you enjoy doing is playing football, surely you would play better due to it being a pleasant 90 minutes distraction from your day to day miserable existence?

I need a rotary cutter and cutting mat.....I have sewing I want to do. I really want one right now but I don't know where to get one and the internet is too far away. Hmmm. I wonder if I can send Ramsea on an Annika Rice type mission, I will pretend his Focus is actually a helicopter and make him wear some kind of weird luminous jump suit.

Some branches of The Works sell rotary cutters, and most sell cutting mats (I think mine is A2, though I think I have seen larger ones still). not sure of the quality of their rotary cutters, but the cutting matts are a good standard.

What are you making?

A2 is the kind of size I'm after, we have a craft shop just down the road so I'll go for a wander down tomorrow I think. I could manage without the mat but I really need a cutter to make the task bearable! I'm making a quilt so I need to cut out lots of triangles and some squares.....joy! I got the material delivered in time for Christmas so I had something to keep me occupied, turns out I can quite happily occupy myself sleeping and doing nothing so I haven't quite got round to it yet....I still need to put a backing on the last quilt I did but I prefer sewing all the patches together so I haven't got round to that either!

This cottage is awesome. Even more so is the bedroom that is in a dead end. You have to walk through another bedroom (which has a bathroom en suite) to get to it. Fire going, and I've got Mandelson's book to read.
