I seem to have been getting flint by accident. Am I right in assuming you get it randomly from mining gravel?

Yep. Use a shovel for gravel, too. Goes quicker and less wear on your pickaxe.

I've just tried this on the eee, with graphics set to fast & the fog set to 3 inches from my face I get 5FPS but it crashes if I try to collect materials :DD

I like making flying castles so I usually start them on top of a hill, dig a shaft into it & eventually knock away the remaining hill so the castle hovers.

I start off a cave dweller. Before too long I've usually cut away the top of the hill, and put in a glass ceiling turning my cave into a conservatory.

I am well into my walled city project. I've basically joined the top of four large hills with a double moated wall, and now I'm excavating all the soil and stone that butts up against the walls on both side. I have gone through so many shovels.

Sent to Lord Rixondale's work addy:

Quote:
Minecraft is the greatest PC game ever.

There, said it.

I'm building a mountain top fortress, so far consisting of two floors and a battlement. It has nice jutting bits to give it a gothic look. All is jim-dandy for a while with my expeditions to the open cast quarry. Unfortunately one day I stay out too late mining and darkness falls. The monsters emerge from the pits and caves and see me heading back home. Now they know the route, they begin to ascend the steep sided hill. The first night there was a skeleton archer. The second night an archer and two exploding-zombie creepers. I predict tomorrow night there will be more.

I'm crafting arrows to go with my bow, and I managed to take one out from the battlement and another with my sword. One snuck up behind and exploded on me, hurting me badly. Fortunately my new iron armour should help me in future.

There's a cave within the mountain I'm on, and I'm working seams in there. The trick is remembering to get out before night fall. Once tucked up safe on the second floor I craft all night. I'm going to build an orchard outside soon.

I think I can hear a spider on the roof.

This game is the best.

Hmmm, I just found a hacked map for server use that's nothing but infinite squares of flat grass with chests full of infinite stuff. I don't care for the boring terrain but I might hack some of those chests into BeexWorld v1.0 if I can figure out the map editor.

I normally buy stuff like this with 'spare' paypal money in my account, but as it's empty right now, I've not bought it. This thread might give me the nudge to buy it on card on something instead as if I wait much longer, Dimrill will have recreated the universe in his game and I'll be building my first wall.

Have you tried out the redstuff programmability yet, Dimmers? I've seen working AND/OR/XOR/NOT gate designs in the Minecraft forum, so you can really go nuts with it. It's technically Turing complete.

Yeah, the only real point I can see for it at the moment is constructing puzzles for the sake of it.

Thats would be cool. For now at least. Where it's basically still the creative mode from classic.

That said I can't wait for straight mode multiplayer where everything has to be found or built and THE DARK WILL COME.

Yeah, that's going to be ace. We'll need a proper gated village. Or huge castles glowering at each other over dangerous valleys.

As it stands I can't be bothered with the multiplayer. Constant disconnects leaving you inventory-less and all the danger and excitement isn't there without baddies and having to scrounge for things.

Damn, but spires are hard to do in this game. I'm obsessive about everything looking most excellent and realistic, so I'm still working on my three story tower. The excellent thing is that in copying memories of fine medieval castles I've discovered that they really do help - I was sniping at spiders from my battlements. It was ace. Now I need to start digging down.

The only disconnect I had was when I dropped to my death trying to push Mr Dave off Dimrill's Thrusting Bridge.

The day/night/monsters thing does add an important level of menace that is missing. Actually being able to mine stone in SP is a bonus, as well.

It's buggy. You can do both, but they're not 100% reliable. The mining is largely find, the smelting not quite so.

I've not been able to mine stone at all. Sand and mud I can do about 50% of the time, the rest of the time they are immortal respawning blocks. Stone pulverises without dropping any resource.

Nope, just using fists. Should still work fine, just be slower. Others were saying it was working for them, just wasn't working for me.

The weird thing was, there were big areas of respawning blocks that were permanent, the whole time I was playing. I go somewhere else, and I can dig fine. Stone didn't work anywhere though.

Still, it says it's buggy.

Mountain fortress stage one is almost complete, two more days and it's done, I reckon. I shall be opening it up for tours later. :)

Monsters become slightly less scary once you know how to kill them. But only slightly less. When I was digging my basement I burst out into the open, and there was a spider and a creeper lurking below. There was a sound like a train rattling over tracks - it was scarifying!

Woh, woh, woh. You can't get cobblestone with fists.

Fists are good enough to get wood, gravel etc.

But you need a wood pick or better for stone, and iron pick or better for gold and so on.

I've made a nice little underground house in a hill. I've found shit tons of coal, just enough iron to make one pickaxe and a little bit of gold.

This is my house:

I put that flower there. It's my one attempt at decoration.

The first night in my house, before I'd found coal, was terrifying. Pitch black and terrible sounds. Now it's a lot less scary. I just mine during the night and go out to collect wood and porks during the day.

I need to check out how to make armor and stuff, but the Wiki appears to be down for me today, which isn't helping.

It's definitely true in BeexWorld, because the same thing happened to me until I made a wooden pick.

But you can still smash the blocks? Because I can definitely smash stone blocks with my fists. I must have just been assuming I was getting cobblestone when I actually wasn't.
