My Mum was asking me how people copy DVDs and I explained about ripping to XVid and doing full copies of DVDs. She said she wanted to know what specific software people tend to use on Vista to burn off a copy of a DVD with menus and all, because the local vicar has a worry about the young daughter of one of his parishoners who might have some naughty software on her hard drive, and Mum wants to tell the vicar which free-to-download easy to use ripping software to be on the lookout for, so the vicar can tell the parishoner and she can in turn prevent her daughter from becoming an evil pirate.

Anyone got any ideas of what I might recommend, you know, to tell the vicar?

DVDShrink is one of the best for ripping.

I usually get Soundwave to do it though.

Tell the vicar you've found a load of knives in the kitchen. And that he better be on the lookout because they can be used to stab so who knows what she is up to.

(sorry)

Sometimes Mr B. Torrent lends me movies to watch. Apparently it's usually quicker to download them than to rip them, so he told me.

The suspicion is that this lass is trying to rip DVDs about learning to play a musical instrument rather than the latest Will Smith, otherwise she probaby would be torrenting. at least that's what the vicar reckons.

Certainly a good deal more lightweight and less hungry than Azureus. But doesn't have a lot of the Carlos Fandango upload stuff that Azureus has. But as a leech on the ass of the internet that doesn't bother me.

I'm surprised she wasn't able to find such things through TPB etc. Is she playing an obscure instrument perchance? (I love my own accidental bad puns)

If she's looking to play the pink oboe, then the internet is the easiest place to look.

Anyone who lets their kids onto a PC without their own locked down user account needs taking outside and shooting frankly. And WTF is the vicar involved for anyway? Or have FACT now got adverts that say "Jesus thinks you are a cunt if you copy DVD's"?

Are you saying that the girl may be a lesbian as well? The vicar may be able to help as the church has a cure for this. It's called becoming a nun.

I have been here since the time of the Dinosaurs, crashed in a Cybertronian spaceship. I was reborn by the Ark computer back in the 80s.

So not new, really.

Also, lurking and that.

Haven't read the whole thread but just wanted to point out that Clone dvd is pretty useless you also have "Any dvd" installed (also by Slysoft).

"Any dvd" runs in the background and automatically strips the protection of any commercial dvd you put in your dvd-drive.
Then (and ONLY then) you can use Clone dvd to make a copy of said disc.

Pretty sure that's correct ?

I know that this is a redundant post, but it was annoying me.

Pirates don't rip DVDs.

By definition, if you have a DVD of something, you are not a pirate, because you have the DVD.

Ripping is still illegal in the UK.

What, really? Can we not make copies of our CDs for personal use either? Because I thought we could copy CDs (hence MP3 players existing) and I'd have thought DVDs would be subject to the same copyright laws.

I have not remotely looked into this, so I'd love to know what the situation is and why.

I don't think there's any case law on, say, ripping a CD for an iPod or ripping a DVD to put on a PSP. I'm actually more familiar with US law and "fair use" provisions than I am the UK ones. It'd be a tough sell, I think, prosecuting someone for personal use format-shifting.

I'd thought the ability to rip a CD to an iPod was down to the right under statute to make a backup. Or is that myth?

I have no inclination to look this up, as I want to be spoon fed.

Ah, bollocks. Fine. OFFICAL LAW-TYPE POSITION will be posted up later. With footnotes and everything.

EDIT - interim - I think the problem may be the anti-piracy coding on the DVD which you have to crack, that being against some law or other.

In related news - the piratebay ruling is due soon...

Without piratebay I won't be able to watch Chuck, House, Lost, Smallville, My Name is Earl, Scrubs and some misc others.

Well, I will, but I's have to wait for (spit) British TV to show them.

I don't have Sky.

True, but I fear if piratebay is closed, there'll be a domino effect and a 'torrent' of lawsuits. Much the same way the Kazza websites all seemed to fold at the same time.

Nope.

A link to the proposal to make it legal, proving it currently isn't.

Wow. That's... bonkers. And it's amazing how pervasive the myth is that you have a right to make backups - a quick google UK search I did came back with loads of "yeah, it's legal".

I found this earlier but it's dated Jan 2008 and the consultation period ran until April 2008. I didn't find anything newer.
