WOULD SOMEONE OUT THERE PLEASE TELL ME EXACTLY, WHAT IS MEANT BY FISH AND CHIPS? NOW I DONT THINK ITS REALLY THAT SIMPLE, COMPARED TO WHAT MOST AMERICANS THINK IT MAY BE. FISH IN ITSELF, IS SELF EXPLANATORY. CHIPS THOUGH, IS A BIT CONFUSING. CHIPS IN AMERICA ARE THESE OVEN BAKED SLICE POTATOES SOLD IN BAGS, MOST OFTEN SERVED AS A SIDE SNACK WITH HAMBURGERS AND HOT DOGS. BUT SOMETHING TELLS ME THAT THE CHIPS IN GREAT BRITAIN ARE PERHAPS MORE CLOSER TO WHAT AMERICANS CALL HOME FRIES OR PERHAPS COOKED A LITTLE MORE THAN HOME FRIES. TO SOME, CHIPS ARE THE SAME AS FRENCH FRIES IN AMERICA, BUT IM ALMOST SURE THEY ARE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. CHIPS IN GREAT BRITAIN MAY BE SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TO FRENCH FRIES, BUT I SUSPECT THEY ARE MADE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. CAN SOMEONE OUT THERE TELL ME HOW DIFFERENT THEY ARE MADE. I DO SEE THE LARGE BAGS OF POTATOES LINED UP AGAINST THE WALL AT THIS FISH AND CHIPS PLACE, SO I ALREADY KNOW THEY ARE NOT MANUFACTURED BY A LARGE COMPANY, PLACED IN INDIVIDUAL BAGS FOR THIS ESTABLISHMENT TO SELL. THE CONFUSION IS NOT WITH THE FISH. ITS WITH THE CHIPS.

This is possibly because we never faced nazi occupation, though.

It was faced and people said "no, thank you" and we went on with our lives. Or so I'm lead to believe.

It's a bit more like if the government had stuck every single soldier in the empure in Dover, and then the nazis had dropped off in Canterbury and quickly jogged along, and suddenly before anyone realised they'd invaded, the entire third Reich was in London. Which didn't happen.

I actually reckon the english would have done a lot worse than the French in their situation. Stubborn defiance in a shooty conventional we shall not be moved way, we could and can do exceptionally, well, but all that cloak and dagger underground resistance stuff? It's just not proper, wot. The French, though, they love it, bless 'em.

Now, of course, we'd be fucked either way. The army would still kick some arse, if not more, but the loyalty of the people could be bought if they simply got a high-ranking official onto Jonathon Ross' good side, or explained that Nazism would be good for hosue prices.

Am I wrong in thinking that French Fries were invented in Belgium?

Yeah, the 'french' bit comes from the way they're cooked. Lots of things were 'frenched' back in the early 20th century. Fnar.

Of course, if they were invented now they'd be Scotchish Fries.

Only if, by law, they had to be deep fried in beef dripping.

Agreed. I still remember the old chip-pan my Mum had when I was growing up - it turned into a solid block of lard when it was cool (complete with eons-old crispy bits embedded in the fat). I swear she only ever replaced the lard maybe twice in my entire childhood. Of course, it made the best bloody chips ever.

Indeed. And the irony is that I bet he doesn't expect it to be battered, either.
