The relationship between games and gamers just ain't the same as it used to be -- can't imagine anyone who isn't nostalgic about it having the patience for that money-gobbling money-gobbler these days, and who can blame 'em? Dimensions would've been a bit doshy at 800 points; 1200 is... optimistic.

not liking;

the slow speed of the autofire
increased difficulty
laggy/disconnecty multiplayer
X being the detach button
odd Force behaviour (it doesn't seem to 'stick' as much as it used to and is harder to control... although I'm comparing to the Speccy version mostly).

I dunno, plenty of younger shooter fans seem to be discovering the joys of 'memorizers' these days (at least on the dedicated forums), and there's always 'Infinite Mode' (gnnnnnnhh!) for those who don't understand how these games should be approached yet. I have a brother of 12 who finds my shmup obsession maddening at times (in that he can flick through my games for ages and not find something different), but he's been enjoying some co-op games on R-Type I with me, and he's already getting to level 3 by himself in the Classic Mode. There's still hope! :p

R-Type II had completely passed me by until I had access to MAME, but I was still eager to give it a fair go (although I was already a huge fan of the series, and, like most people, I initially stopped practicing at the level two boss). They're only short games, so I'd like to think a fair amount of people will at least practice the first one in wee bursts, even if it is ten times harder than the other stuff they've bought this year.

Or perhaps I'm too optimistic...

(I don't see why anybody couldn't reach level four after a couple of accumulated hours of play, mind you.)

EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention that 'Infinite Mode', which I was pretty down on earlier, actually unlocks every stage you beat in the Classic Mode, so that you can practice the later levels 'properly'. This could well have opened up the possibility of single-crediting R-Type II to thousands more people.

Whaaaaaat? Okay, I know I paid 1200 points for R-Type Dimensions, but for an update of Artillery Duel? When you can buy Worms for 400 points?

That's fucking mental, that is.

Oh.

So they really are making 1200 the new 800 then. Regardless of the level of content.

Well thats XBLA fucked then. :S

EDIT: And scorched earth was always so much better than Worms. Bugger, bugger, bugger. So now my interaction with XBLA will have been reduced from the wonderful world of picking games on a whim and buying things to explore new ideas, to just only buying the Big AAA Titles. Fuck.

Yep, I said when R-Type came out that if they continue to release games regularly at 1,200 points then XBLA will become dead to me. I'd have bought R-Type and Death Tank at 800 points. It's just the right price for an impulse buy.

I suppose I should be thanking them, as they're saving me money.

really dissapointed by the price.. looking forward to -playing this with lots of bezzies.. it should be better than worms, as it is real time, but come on , it was a mini bonus game on the saturn, and making it 1200 :(

Indeed.

And for super multiplayer games you want lots of people to buy it. Not the 6 committed Saturn fans who don't mind it costing so much.

So not only will I not want to buy it because it's expensive, I know other people will think like that, so I'm even less likely to buy it.

:(

I blame myself for buying Braid and Castle Crashers (games which are still worth 1200 mind). If dudley was still here he would be telling me 'told you so'...

And has been said before, with the falling cost of retail games, the XBLA games are becoming poorer and poorer value. I bought about 35 arcade games from Sept 07 - Aug 08. I don't think I've bought one since.

Braid will be 800 points next week, they are bringing back the Deal of the Week promotion from last year. I suspect this will be the model now for some xblah games; 1200 points at launch, 800 points on promotion.

Same here. I'm a patient chap, so I'll just wait. I don't want to shell out 1200 for a game on principle really.

would be better if they had the sale for like a month and had 4 or 5 things going so if you fancied something you could wait for pay day or something.

Braid really is something special. The demo left me pretty underwhelmed (maybe because I was playing through it with a "Go On, Show Me You're Worth 1200 Points" attitude, but the full game is utterly fantastic.

The psychotic rabbits are almost worth the entrance fee on their own.

Good to see another Dreamcast game on its way to XBLA - hopefully it'll lead to more as the article suggests.

Bad to see that it's another 1200-pointer.

Couldn't we just play deathmatch on UT3 instead of the yawnathon war mode (or whatever it's called)? It's very similar, is it not?

I only have Doom and CoD4. And now I've finally finished it in single player I'll be trading the latter in on Friday towards Killzone 2.

Yeah, because keeping CoD4 would guarantee him some Bezzie gaming, of course.

To be honest, I am happy enough with just CoD4 and GoW2. I'm still unsure on UT3; the single player has taught me how to play properly, but OMG!!! the AI bots are unfathomably stupid at times.

Wouldn't mind L4D though.

I'm strongly thinking of trading in COD(5?*) against L4D. I tried it once and, well, it's not really for me. Zombies sounds like more fun.

I might get Left 4 Dead soon. I was going to buy it online, but I used up the funds for it buying Street Fighter IV.

I've just noticed I can get L4D for 800 points on GoosEx, and CoD:WoW fetches 750 so I'll be doing that promptly.
