No doubt we've all been given mnemonics to help us remember things, probably at school but possibly at work and by parents too. SOHCAHTOA, for example, meaning Sine Opposite Hypotenuse, Cosine Adjacent Hypotenuse, Tangent Opposite Adjacent.

The one in my subject title is a list of animals that, if you hit them on the roads, you need to report the incident to the police: Pigs, Cattle, Sheep, Horses, Asses, Goats, Mules, Dogs.

The other old favourite is, of course, Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain, for the colours of the rainbow.

So, hit me up with some mnemonics and school me.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Keanu Reeves doesn't count.

You can find an excellent list here:

http://everything2.com/index.pl?node=obscene+mnemonics

Quote:
The carpal bones of the hand going clockwise round in the anatomical position starting with the scaphoid bone, found in the anatomical snuffbox. (The anatomical snuffbox, weird name no? I think it is named so because, in the days of snuff sniffing, people used to put the snuff there to sniff from, but seems a daft place to sniff snuff from to me. If you abduct your thumb as far as it will go, the anatomical snuff is the triangle dip formed below the thumb on the back of the hand just above the wrist. If you're bothered, its borders are formed by the tendons of Extensor Policis Longus, ulnar side, and Extensor Policis Brevis and Abductor Policis Longus, radial side. It is important medically as it contains the scaphoid bone and the radial artery. But am seriously deviating from the subject here. Right, back to carpal bones.)
Sexy Lucy Tried Pissing Having Copulated Twenty Times

Scaphoid
Lunate
Triquital
Pisiform
Hamate
Capitate
Trapezoid
Trapezium

Little Willie's dead and gone, he will cry no more,
For what he thought was H20 was H2SO4!

H2SO4 is, of course, sulphuric acid (forgive the lack of subscript characters).

Stalagtites cling tight to the ceiling, and Stalagmites might just reach them one day if they grow tall enough.

Spring forwards, fall backwards (whether to turn your clocks forward or backward an hour).

It's "stalactites" actually, and that's how I remember it. Stalactites come down from the ceiling, stalagmites go up from the ground.

Surely the proper condensation of that is "Mites go up, Tights go down"? Fnar, etc.

Chemistry: Naming system for the one to four carbon molecule series of alkanes and alkenes I was taught as "Monkeys Eat Peanut Butter", to jog memories of Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane. Then the series gets all boring and logical, at least if you can remember Latin numbers.

:this: Not that its useful on a day to day basis

I never liked sohcahtoha or whatever it was. My old maths teacher, who has now died, sadly, drummed into me:

Me too, but that was the alternative, and a dig at a local 'rival'.

Mnemonincs - never worked for me - all you are doing is learning twice as much pointless shit.

Fun, then, in Lincolnshire schools... where everyone is so antique there's no other known method of teaching anyone anything. JUST TELL ME THE BLOODY FACT and I'll write it down and then read if if I ever forget it!

I've actually punched someone for saying that once in a meeting.

"Sorry Dave, I assumed that the simple task of compiling the stats had been done, being as it's a half hour job which is yours alone to do and you usually do it first thing every morning and we're now at three in the afternoon"

"Ah, Mike, never assume, you'll make an ass out of you and me"

*thwack*

"Ah, Dave, never be a cunt, because I'll punch you again".

/edit besides it only weorks if you are Prince, or a chav

Mr.Cox taught us that in year 8. He was a lecherous pervert. This is mostly why I remember the 'Assume' thing-rather than the thing itself

There's also

Pluto's not a planet anymore, sorry.

I'm used to 'MD' being short for 'me-do' on beex, so the title of this thread was understandable confusing for me.

Can Ceres and Charon really be considered planets? Not familiar with the X, although it's probably Xerxes or XL-2252AD or something :P
