We have a public holiday for the national day of mourning, on Thurs 22nd Sept.

I don't know why they picked this day, my friend jokingly suggested it's the time difference.

A free day off will be nice, I guess. I don't know what I'll do with it, probably some gardening or something.

The current queue to view Het Majesty Lying-In-State is proper insane. 4.2 miles!

What3words is great - so long as you can copy and paste. They claim no similar combinations are close to each other, but just pluralise a word and sometimes you're close (but a few miles from the right place), which has happened to The Queue tracker a couple of times.

I find the arguements against W3W interesting as an example of perfect being the enemy of good.
W3W definitely has issues, but when the alternatives are getting people to work out their lat/long or read out grid references, then W3W is streets ahead of those.

There's a part near HMS Belfast where to people are moving so fast, it's like there's no queue at all

I'd see it more as it seeming so great - when written - that it's easy to miss the errors that happen when (as here) someone seems to be reading the words to someone else who types them in. If you know, then you just spell it letter by letter. In this case, where the queue extends and shrinks, you really only need a rough location, and W3W is good. As would be an updated map with a landmark - probably better, really, to say "somewhere near the Kings Arms" than "this specific spot, which is already out of date".

I keep dipping into that video of the queue and I'm amazed that the queue is so dense in the far reaches, but around London bridge, it's so spread out as to be invisible

Funeral day.

I've nothing planned so will probably have it on in the background, if only for the sense of history and the choral music.

Was waiting at the railway station yesterday and amongst the usual mess of announcements came "Her Majesty the Queen is lying in state", leading me to think "on which platform?".

I’ll definitely watch the main event, but might be doing a jigsaw of Buckingham palace at the same time.

I'm working, so not bothering with the whole thing. I'm not wasting a day of holiday for the royal family, I don't get sufficient to spend on me.

Lady T watched a lot of it, I watched some, but after a while I drifted away. I get the momentous nature of the occasion, and over the years I've come to appreciate the tradition but on a personal level I didn't feel all that engaged.

The pageantry and all that was nice, and it's lovely to see London in the sunshine. I did find there were some bits, some tiny little passing shots, during the coverage that really jumped out and felt a bit ....jarring*... to me, like when a big speed limit sign crept into shot, or one that showed a coffee van in the background behind the crowd. It's a weird mix of tradition and modern world clashing in one TV frame.

*That's not quite the word I was looking for but it'll do for now. It's like the feeling when you are at a musesum or castle and then see a vending machine. Some may say anachronistic but that's not quite what I mean.

There was nothing jarring in the Gilead funeral in The Handmaid's Tale (S5 Episode 2), which I watched yesterday - pure pageantry. Amusing that the scheduling should throw it up to coincide (I think it was released last Wednesday).

Season 5? Hang on... That's the new one isn't it? I'd best get on that!
