I’ve been playing The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
It’s the remake of the 1993 Gameboy OG. I never played the original so I can’t comment on the accuracy but having looked at a couple of videos on YouTube it’s very similar but has some QoL changes.
The graphics are lovely but there’s some frame rate issues in some areas - bit weird for a Nintendo game to be honest. The music is alright in that typical twee fashion which suits the new aesthetic but it lacks that Nintendo goodness that they’re known for.
The game itself is just ... very nice. It’s pleasant. It’s enjoyable. It’s not exactly taxing, mind. It’s just a very pleasant enjoyable relaxing walk in the park, I guess. I’m about 70% through it, I think, and I’ve got the whole map unlocked. There’s some annoyances - there’s some changing weapons around when there’s a few redundant buttons on the pad not being used. I mean, come on, you only get two empty slots for abilities and weapons and I have to choose if I want to jump!? I basically always had “jump” filling one of the two slots and switched between the others. Just irritating really. Those frame rate issues are a minor annoyance too. Some of the boss fights are irritating since they don’t telegraph how to kill them. I went through all my weapons trying to kill this bull guy when I only needed to charge up my sword move which I hadn’t done in fucking hours and hours of playing the thing. And the thing is, a charge move has never worked with ANY other enemy that possesses a shield - so it’s a break in the game logic - nor does the enemy do anything to suggest that I needed a charge attack. Also, the dungeons are mainly just blocks of rooms stitched together which is a bit disappointing, and there’s a guy who will let you make your own dungeon and you just bash a load of blocks together and BOOM you’ve done the job of the devs.
Anyway, I’m really enjoying it and it’s cute and stuff if you’re into that. If you like Nintendo games you’ll probably know if you’ll be spaffing into your pants at a tiny cute Link. I just need a bit more I think.
Y’know what’s bugging me about this game? There’s far too many random staircase entries that are just hidden under some innocuous thing with no indication that there might be an, often important and needed to actually fucking progress, staircase. Like, you slash a bush (because you’ll be slashing a load of foliage because reasons) and there’s a hidden staircase below it. Why not have a shine or some rustle or something that might give it away? Seems really stupid and crap to me.
