I watched three episodes of Gentleman Jack last night and I’m not convinced. I don’t feel captivated by the main character, and though her arc may see her soften, in a lot of instances she’s nasty rather than strong.
The looks/confiding to camera and being called out on them were fine much more effectively in Fleabag. The sister is just too flatly annoying. There’s no nuance to character. Actually, that’s true of all the main characters.
Has anybody watched it all and does it get better?
We've watched them all to date. I think it's the first character that Suranne Jones has played that hasn't made me want to give her a big slap, which probably means she's a good actress. It's not one of the Beeb's best, but not the worst either. Not sure whether it gets better, but if it's even loosely based on real events, it's quite interesting.
Oh, I think it’s based on a real memoir, and yes, I think the underlying story is excellent (I’ve seen four or five episodes now) but the acting isn’t the best and the production/direction is just awful.
Suranne Jones has a dedicated bit of really jarring music which means she’s walking, with purpose. Look, she’s walking, she’s walking with big forceful strides, look! She’s walking like a man. She’s a woman but like a man! Watch her walk like a man! Here ends her walking music! Then she’ll inevitably thump the table.
