Read at your natural pace. I'm interested to know because I struggle to get through books, so not sure if it's a lack of time or my reading speed. I got 556 words per minute, which makes me 122% faster than the national average.

386 apparently. It's a bit of a weird test though, as you'll read a lot slower being dropped into a middle of a story with no context and then being tested on it. It isn't really testing reading speed per se, more comprehension of new information speed.

33% faster than average on that test. With books it really depends on how interested I am and how it's written. Once I lose interest slightly my mind wanders and then I keep having to reread stuff because I realise that I'll have been reading the words but thinking about something else entirely. When that happens too much I just don't bother and stop reading.

You read 796 words per minute.
That makes you 218% faster than the national average

I've always read fast, though I do have a slight tendency to skim read. I'll go through 3-4 regular sized books in a week.

I did better second time around, as it was Alice in Wonderland. :)

I got 480-something but I agree it might not be a very good test as Trooper says. Apart from being dropped into the middle of a story, the 'boy' character talks like a spaz which my mind tripped over utterly and I had to re-read his lines a couple of times. Seriously, look at the state of it:

Quote:
“It’s a-movin’,” he said to me as he passed; “a-screwin’ and a-screwin’ out. I don’t like it. I’m a-goin’ ‘ome, I am.”

384 (damz youz Trooperz) for me.

I tend to reread stuff a lot, and act out in my head what's going on sometimes, so in reality I'm probably much slower.

I used to read about a page a minute (typical paperback) which I thought was reasonable. My eldest son reads about twice that speed and somehow manages to take all of it in too.

I had that story, too.

You read 544 words per minute.
That makes you 118% faster than the national average.

I tend to skim too.

The national average seems to be really slow, unless by "100% faster" they mean "at 100% of".

362 on that website, but I am rusty on my reading at the moment as I've not been doing as much of it (apart from on here and the web)

They don't. Check the scale.

Given that its a .com address is it possible the national average they are talking about is the US ?

My numbers

Quote:
You read 676 words per minute.
That makes you 170% faster than the national average.

I did it again and got the exact same number (weird) if you were struggling with the text from War of the Worlds if you hit the settings button you can switch between War of the Worlds / Alice in Wonderland / The Wizard of Oz

I'd expect them to be largely comparable, though.

Weirdly, I did it again and got War of the Worlds this time around, and scored 631.

I think it's US - the results talk about "8th Grade" etc.

Oh, huh, and there's more information if you keep pressing the red button, including a page where they demonstrate that they don't know how eReaders work.

I think they should have dressed it up as a test of your recall, rather than a test of your reading speed - at least at the start.

Can a Kindle not tell you? It makes sense that it would know.

I put the kindle down open on a page when I go for a piss though. Immediately skewing the count.

Nah, it could easily toss out pages that were too fast / too slow compared to your average. After reading eleventy billion pages it would know pretty well, I suspect.

[edit]And of course it does know, because it does the "time left in chapter" thing. There doesn't seem to be a way to get an actual WPM number (or similar) out of it, though.

They know your reading speed in WPM so are calculating how long it would take you to read a book with a specific number of words and then factoring in the battery life of different eReaders. What have they got wrong?

eReaders only* use battery when you turn the page**. So the more often you turn the page, the faster the battery runs out.

* pretty much
** well, technically it's when the screen is redrawn

Yeah, the reading speed is pretty much immaterial to battery life.

They've included the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet on there which obviously don't work that way but yeah, I see what you mean.

Trooper wrote:

Well, no; on your traditional eReader it's directly related. Granted it can't be calculated as they'd done without knowing some other stuff (i.e. how big you've made the font on screen) but the faster you read the faster you'll 'turn the page' so the faster you'll run down the battery.

Not to how many books you can read before the battery runs out, it isn't. Whether you read them in five days or five weeks, it'll effectively use the same amount of charge.

Yeah, that was the point I was trying to make :) The graph is based on number of books read, in which reading speed is immaterial.
