Defiance is a number of things. It's a third-person shooter, but it's also an MMO. It's a PC game, but it's also coming to consoles. It's a video game, but it's also a television show. A multimedia collaboration between Trion Worlds—the developer behind the MMORPG Rift, launched earlier this year—and the SyFy network, Defiance is nothing if not ambitious; events from the game will have an impact on the show, and vice versa.

Ars spoke with Rob Hill, senior producer on the game, to learn more about the world and just how the cross-media aspects will work.

Both the game and the show take place in a near future, post-apocalyptic version of Earth. First an alien race came to Earth intent on colonizing the planet, and then their arks—massive ships loaded with alien plant and animal life—crashed on the surface. At the time of Defiance, the world is in a period of re-growth, but has been significantly changed thanks to the newly introduced alien species. The game is centered in the remains of San Francisco, while the show will take place in St. Louis.

"They exist within the same universe," Hill told Ars. "And primarily where we're going to be different is the fact that things that happen in the game will occur in the show and things that happen in the show will occur in the game. From a global standpoint this could be a large political change, a big environmental change, and they'll happen simultaneously on both."

No word on a launch date, but it's for 360, PS3, and PC. No cross-platform play however, apparently (boo).

It's certainly ambitious.

Sounds interesting, but can't help feeling the game will be limited in scope because of the limitations of the show. Eg, I doubt I will be able to Nuke St Louis in the game, which is a shame, because that sort of free reign would be awesome!

If there's no cross-platform play, that means that what's in the TV show is going to be limited to pre-scripted events - because otherwise you would have the 360 game, the PS3 game, and the PC game all proceeding down different routes.

So it's pretty much a waste of time.

Well, it could be based upon a single one of them (the PC version obv, it is best) and then go from there, but...

What was that TV program in the late 80s where the story ran up to a cliffhanger and then they got the public to ring in and 'write' the next bit of the story? It was done in a very 80s Who style and most intriguing to my pre-teen mind. Chinny will know.

Anyway, this reminds of that. It won't work, because the public at large are arseholes and they'll try and break it.

It had Tony Robinson in it I think.

Oh wow! It starred an ex-Doctor Who, and you didn't let Chinny answer! You are in serious trouble now! :D

I have this. I have played it. It's alright actually.

It's exactly as you would expect of a shooter based MMO WoW/Guild Wars clone, but it is quite well done and i'm enjoying it so far. Plus it is nice that it actual involves some skill in combat, and isn't just about gear. I'm currently sniping heads and cloaking around, but I have just picked up a bitch-ass sawn off shotgun, so might change my play style a bit...

It was £5 in the steam sale and no monthly costs, so cheap enough.

If anybody has this on PC and fancies teaming up at some point, let me know. My account is Trooperlooper and my current character is Squelcher. I have no idea which you need to add people.

Any show that could potentially be broken mid-exposition by the speaker being suddenly knocked on his back to be violently teabagged by a previously-unfeatured character called Trooperlooper gets my tv license fee.

I was on holiday. And it's not him that's in trouble, it's YOU.

In 1988 McCoy wasn't an "ex-Doctor Who". He was the current Doctor Who.

Please report to the punishment block immediately. You will be stripped naked, tied to a chair and forced to watch Confessions Of A Window Cleaner on a loop for 3 days.

Hang on? This is punishment? Craster told me that this is what all the new Mods have to do.
