My Dad bought a new PC a few months ago and it’s been working fine but recently, the CD drive seems to be playing up. I’ve run out of ideas with it so I’m looking for help here.

What’s going on is that the CD drive will only play certain CDs. They don’t skip all the time, it’s just that they sound garbled and fuzzy. On one CD, track 1 and 2 will be like this but the rest are ok… Weird.

When you rip the CDs, some will work fine but others will rip them with the fuzzy, garbled sound.

The drivers on it are all up to date but they’re from 2006 and that’s the latest I can find.

I’m guessing that because he hasn't had it to long, I’d be able to get it changed with the manufacturers but that sounds like a hassle so if I can fix it in the mean time, I will. Is there anything I can do to fix it do you reckon?

It wouldn't even occur to me to try and 'fix' something like this; it's broken, get a new one. If the manufacturer's replacement service is a pain in the ass then a whole new drive can be picked up for about £15 these days so just order one and fit it yourself.

I did think that I would have to go down that route which is indeed a pain. Seeing as he's only had the PC a couple of months, I'll try the manufacturers first.

It's not some stupid copy-protection thing is it?

The wife had some CDs that she couldn't rip to mp3 some time ago, disabling auto play was enough to solve the problem.

Otherwise, what's it like with other disc media?

It played a DVD fine this morning, but the CD's were very hit and miss.

That's a thought, it's worth trying some of the CDs that aren't working in a different PC and CD drive in case that's the problem.

Is this because I composed the original message in Word before copying it here? Or because I put an apostrophe in CDs? :)

No apostrophe in 'dads', and you've used broke instead of broken.

I don't like 'dad' uncapitalised either, but technically it's fine, I suppose.

I agree with the apostrophe issue as I'm easily confused but it's very unlike me to not capitalise Dad. I have a thing about that too. How strange of me?

It was all very unlike you, which is why I had a major issue with it. I was worried your account had been hacked.

Good idea, flawed in its execution. Like Rasputin.

**update** My Dad phoned Asda to complain about the broken CD drive and they gave him £30 compensation as I'd already offered to fit a new one.

I've just done it and it works fine! Good result all round.
