I use http://www.catalyst2.com/ . Lovely friendly guys based in Ireland. Very reasonably priced, too.

I've used Flump.net for the past few years with no downtime or other issues. I know Mimi has had problems with them, though.

The other people I'd recommend are my old colleagues at 123-reg/Webfusion.

What are you planning to do with it?

I'd personally avoid 123-Reg due to their obscene password restrictions.

They allow any swear words that are shorter than 8 characters :)

That must be a new restriction that isn't retrospectively applied, my 123-reg password is 11 characters and has been since forever.

Also, exactly eight characters? Well done, 123-reg, you belming retards.

What do you recommend for a simple site (and person)? I'm looking to revamp (or vamp) mine.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. :)

Replace mrdictionary.net, with Objection (with its huge (gigabytes) database and zillions of clicks a picosecond) and the main site which is currently in scary mode.

To move Objection, I'm going to upload a compressed copy of the dumped database and then use shell to recreate it.

I've got an offline static wiki-like page maker program I'm going to use to make the interconnected blog content pages of the main site and -hopefully- use rsync or something like it to update it.

Have cancelled our account with Flump due to them having all of the communication skills of, well, IT geeks.

Shame, it was good while there weren't any problems. Just going to have to pay a few quid more for a company who will phone me if there is a problem and not lock everything down so hard I can't get near to fix any problems!

Your website has a problem so we are going to suspend your email and lock you out of your control panel as well. Nice.

I changed from Flump to ukhost4u, but I liked the customer service of Flump.

They were great until my site was hacked. I had no idea what was going on. They shut the entire account down, not just the site. I couldn't get in to fix it, I couldn't get any explanation.

The final straw was the MySQL upgrade they did last week which also broke my site and probably broke any number of others as well. The site wouldn't have worked properly even if I had upgraded it (long story) so went to a host that would guarantee running the version I required + will pick up the phone if there is a problem. Twice the price but the value of having someone who will pick up the phone is worth it.

I use UK2.net. I don't have any websites but have a domain and email accounts for myself and some family members.

Always had good service and the very odd time there has been an issue they are quick to respond.

You have to pay extra (per domain) to manage DNS with UK2.net. That is reason enough not to use them in my opinion.

I am trying to give ukhost4u extra money to upgrade my hosting account and they're making it very difficult, not answering my questions.

Tempted to update the sales ticket telling them I'm going elsewhere.

Well, they upgraded me to a Windows server, but *something* about the set up is strange. If I deploy the exact same files to a work server they operate fine, but on the ukhost4u server they just don't work.

I raised this in support tickets and they tried some stuff yesterday, but their response today is that they don't have anyone with the expertise to fix my problems.

Been a little while since I've dealt with asp. Net, but may be of some use if you describe the problem.

That's fair enough - they've given you a box, it's up to you to make the stuff on it go.

I assume you've checked that all the version of the installed software are the same?

I mentioned it in BitsnBobs yesterday, one problem with autopostback events not firing, one with the Ajaxcontroltoolit not working. Both work on debug mode and when deployed to a work server, but not on the ukhost4u setup.

Except I'm not allowed to register my own DLLS on the box, so I can't check that kind of thing. I noticed when I raised the ticket about the AJAXcontrolToolkit not working yesterday that they installed the AJAXControlToolKit sample site, and they couldn't even make that work.

So If I'm upgrading to a box with the sole reason that I want to use ASP stuff and I can't use my own DLLs and I can't even make a bloody postback work, I have to give up the ghost.

I assume it's a virtual server, hence the lack of being able to install your own DLLs?

That's the problem with cheap(er) web hosting - you often have to share with other people, so (understandably) they don't want to go around changing the versions of everything in case it screws other peoples stuff up.

Can you stretch to a small dedicated server? A little cloud server wouldn't be that expensive (depending on how much drive space you need).

1and1 will do a cloud server for £21.60 a month:
http://www.1and1.co.uk/cloud-server-config

[edit]Oh wait, you have to pay £10 or £19 per month on top of that for Windows, too :(

Sounds like some part of IIS is missing. Is it a dedicated machine that you can get at the "Windows Features" part of, or is it just "ftp your files here"?

Sadly the latter.

As I can get at the requisite IIS management panel stuff here at work and therefore know that my code works, I know it's something in their config that is making it not work, so I've told them to leave it for now and I'll stick on my Linux server.

Shame, as it means I can't use ASP.net stuff, but maybe I'll just order a Learn PHP book and dig in, rather than scraping around with code samples and using the online PHP manuals.

I downloaded a book from the app store which seems pretty good. I've already learnt things I didn't know, but you have to be in the right mood to read it.
