Anyone else playing this? Just had my first match. It's fucking excellent. I was in the shittiest tank, a newb tank with no upgrades, and for the first time in an online game ever I went into action on my first game and not only survived the battle but destroyed one enemy and damaged another. It's instictively playable, easy to learn and super fun. I trundled around behind a farm house poking my nose out and taking shots. Tense but silly fun! Very atmospheric too.

I am in a Russian tank. This pleases me. It is like a tractor with a dinky cannon on top. I think it's the cutest thing ever.

Whee!

Got shitcaned in two battles, just had one where I destroyed one and damaged two though. This is excellent fun. I have upgraded my wee tanky so it has a bigger gun, suspension, engine, radio and gubbins - but I guess I better graduate soon to a better model. I find hanging back with a good firing position is best at the moment, as I don't know enough sense yet to not get killed when charging forward.

The thing I like about this game is that not only - yes! - is it free to play, but you can jump into a match within thirty seconds of booting it up, and matches rarely last longer than ten minutes tops, which means its perfect for casual gaming. It's a little bit obtuse in the training upgrades, and approaches Eve Online for stats with the guns and tracks and what-not, but the actual game is fun at any rate.

Rather neatly, it can pay to be a light tank with poor guns. If you're lightly armed, and with a decent engine, you can zip pretty fast making it hard for big tanks to one shot you. Then, if you've spotted an enemy and one of your side takes him out, then you get 45% of the points and cash total that the victorious ally in question does. This game rewards spotting for artillery and long range SPG's. Of course, you can do as I do and rattle around in a dinky tank aiming at treads and turret rings, it does sometimes pay off.

Sorry but I couldn't find your original thread rominista! Is there a link? I'd like to read it, and maybe we should post on that one. I can't understand why I can't find it. And yes, we should team up definitely.

Looks good, I may give it a go.

Out of interest, does it support in-game messaging, ie having messages from other players pop up on the display? If so, can this be turned off, ie so you don't need to endure assorted braind dead comments from and between other players?

What a delightful little game! I'm hopeless at it, though. My first battle I followed someone through a gap in the houses and was blown up almost immediately.

I've bought a better tank (Panzerkampfwagen II) and will now focus on upgrading it but man oh man, life here is short and brutal. I think I've dinged a few people but I'm not yet sure what the various shell types do, and invariably when I auto-aim at someone they're actually on the other side of a hill so I can't hit them... so I move closer, then they hit me back, harder.

It's lovely and fast and simple fun, though, excellent stuff.

Yeah, its good. I've had a few kills, been killed lots of times. Good fun. The only thing that niggles is 'Get killed dead quick and have to wait for the battle to finish'

You don't have to wait, I don't think. Once my tank was knocked out I ragequit and was back at the garage screen, the tank in question was labelled 'in battle' and I was able to choose another one to go off and fight with.

I had a really close call when I was near the enemy base, shots started flying past so I turned to flee but hit an invisible wall as the slope was too steep for me (WTF?) and the BANG hit by enemy shots, I'd thrown a tread and was now stuck. As I waited to be blown up, suddenly my crew cheerfully announce they'd fixed the tread and I could move again! :D

True, if you have two tanks or more you can leave a match and start a new one in't other. Sometimes it's worth watching the lone survivor fighting against the odds though. I love it when my crew fix treads too, trying to escape whilst panicking never gets old. As for shells, I stick with AP personally. I suspect HE has less penetration but sets off fires or kills crew faster.

I do enjoy going 'hull down' and poking my turret over a ridge to pop off shots that way. I'm on the second Russian light tank, which is pretty nippy - the T-26.

I think you should be okay with that, probably medium settings edging towards high. Too much grass and enhanced shadows seem to slow the game down the most.

Nope. My investment in Windows 7 is starting to pay off, weird games-wise.

I suppose I'll have to boot into Windows 7 then.

After I've beaten Korea at Starcraft 2.

I am shockingly bad at this game. And it doesn't help that it just throws you into it without explaining a thing. Still, it's good fun.

I'm also shockingly bad at it (only destroyed one other tank so far during my first three hours of play) yet I'm really enjoying it. It's a lot of fun to play and the selection of available tanks is very impressive (but it's going to be a LONG time before I can upgrade to a heavy tank).

My only moan is that the server connection sometimes drops - not sure why.

I'm currently pootling around in a Russian T-26 - a definite improvement on the feeble tin can that you start off with, even though it's still a light tank. :)

A question re the tech trees - I'm currently using a Russian T-26 and am at 'Elite' status with it, ie have maxed out the upgrades.

I can research and add functionality to the next tank in the tree, the T-46, yet I can't use the T-46 in battle - I assume that I need to purchase it first and that it's not a case of getting to use a tank simply because you've researched it?

Correct. You have to research and then actually buy a tank before you can use it.

Oh, a tip if you haven't figured it out already: every day you get a free 250 gold, which you can use to buy a day's subscription, giving double XP and credits. Or you can save it up and buy a longer subscription at a discount. It really adds up.

I was worried I used it all up buying credits to get a better tank! That's a relief.

You're on late the last few nights Malaboob, you want to tank it up later?

Nice tip, thanks for that. :)

Upgraded to a T-46 a while back - a nice improvement on the T-26. :)

Yeah, I just can't manage to be effective in a light tank at all. Upgrading to medium was brilliant, and heavy will probably be better still for my bush-sniping playstyle.

Light tanks are likely only effective in packs, because I find that you start hitting another tank and the damage is being traded back and forth, and if you do win you come away absolutely fucked. Two tanks working together and you can likely neutralize an enemy before it can do either of you too much harm.

I have my new M3 Lee tank. I don't like it. I have a very, very limited amount of turret rotation, as it's not one of the separate circular top ones, but a canon pointing out a static window. Powerful, but very vulnerable.

There really are some complete idiots who play this game... I was just playing on Malinovka (you'd think it was the only map in the game or something) and fully 75% of the team immediately charges straight into that huge open field you start next to so they can be slaughtered. I anticipated the enemy sneaking around and so went to intercept... however, my one tank didn't survive long against the sustained firepower of the three enemies I encountered, and I died. Sure enough, they then reached our base, killed the two defenders and captured the base.

"Well done, you left the base all but undefended" I said.

"Nothing we could have done, they came from behind with fast tanks" responded someone.

For fuck's fucking sake, they're playing it like it's Call of Fucking Duty, charging mindlessly into battle.

Saying that, there's a massive balancing issue here as every game is now just waiting for the inevitable assault from a group of fast moving tanks to come screaming around the edge of the map to get you from behind.

I often wait a bit at the start of each game to see what the rest are doing, then fill in any gaps (either scouting or mid range defence - or base defence if every else has buggered off (usually the artillery stay around the base though)).

But it's a learning process - I'm still crap. :)

That happened to me yesterday - all of a sudden I was rubbish. My own fault I think for driving too far ahead, all alone with the aim of scouting ........ once I started hanging back a little I was able to do a bit of long distance sniping, some careful scouting and a few 'in and out' runs. Much better that way. :)

I've gotten as far as registering, but then it was all :effort: for me, so I'll set it off downloading and try it later on.

I'm "MaliciousAfterthought" as I thought "TheMightySpacePirateRetiredWithAnExtensiveLibraryAboardHisMightySpaceship" would cause target calling issues and be quite unfair.

Doesn't any name more than two letters long have three consecutive characters?

Three of the same, consecutively, I meant. An odd objection for them to make.
