Anyone with a dead Xbox got a spare component cable for it? I'm in the market for one, but the options sold online seem a bit ropey.

Well that was a waste of time and money. The image is no better than my composite cable. What the advert doesn't tell me is that my uk Xbox needs to be modded for HD before the cable will do the things the advert claims.

Next question then... Anyone got a soft modding guide for XBox that doesn't require certain games I haven't got?

/edit Jesus, all the instructions I'm finding are way over my head. Any solutions that don't involve taking the Xbox apart and hot swapping?

When I read you wanted one of these cables I presumed that you already had a missed Xbox. I did mine a few years back by following a guide online. Search this forum because I think someone may have linked to it for me?

You do need certain games though and an Action Replay cheat cartridge. It looks complicated but the instructions I followed were very clear and made it simple.

if you hold down both triggers, then press down on the two joysticks, does it enable progressive scan?

It should.

Certain games and an action replay cartridge are not things I have, or am likely to get. I've never had a need to mod my Xbox. I just want to play Stranger's Wrath and Panzer Dragoon and Thief without it looking like an N64.

I'll try that progressive scan thing now.

/edit apparently it should work, but doesn't.

/edit2 apparently 480p needs to be enabled in the display options, and there is no such option.

It probably doesn't help but I can highly recommend modding your Xbox. It'll do things that you can only dream* of like installing games to the hard drive, playing emulators and other great stuff.

*You could probably have dreamt that but you know.. It's great and worth doing.

For the record, mine is properly chipped. I even did it myself. It was a right pain in the arse, but totally worth it.

DocG came over during his brief but traumatic 'beardless' period and did mine 'on site'. It was far less painful than the original chip he installed into Myfinger's Xbox which had to be seated just right so the LED went green... and then would shift and go red while you tightened the screw.

I had a region switcher disc I had to use every time I wanted to play my import copy of Psychonauts.

Since mine has practically every NES and SNES game and a boat load of Mega Drive games on it, it still sees some action. I hold out hope of a man-cave in my new (as of yet theoretical) house. :)

Fuck yeah! KI2 is the only arcade game I ever completed (with every character, I might add).

Really? I'm mightily impressed! The only arcade game I've ever completed was House of the Dead 2. It cost a small fortune if I remember correctly.

I could do it with only one credit if I used Maya, too.

I also completed the Time Crisis games and the SWAT Team game (I think that's what it's called - it had two big guns), but only when I played with other people.
