£8. Some new features, including cloud saves (or maybe Cloud saves, hyuk hyuk hyuk), some sort of character booster thing, and cheevos. Seems like a random thing to release but there you are.

I don't get, I haven't played an FF games, but is FF7 really that much better than any other FF game (or AN Other JRPG)?

Short answer: yes. I'd flang pence into the berry brown faces of Square for a HD xbox release. Also: IX

9 is really good too, but 7 is the best.

Am I the only one who doesn't like IX? Just couldn't get into it, much like 12 it never grabbed me whereas VII is great, as is VIII and I'm probably the only one who will say this but I really enjoyed X as well...such a shame 13 was such a let down.

I wasn't a fan of 8. It looked glorious, but was just a bit dull.

I too rather liked X. XII I cant remember aside from thinkinv the combat kinda blew and the plot was too poltical rather than personal. XIII the comvat really blew, and the entire game was chasing some rather shit modern trends.
From what little Ive played XIII-2seems better, but still has e same shit combat system.

Ive heard rumours this vii rerelease isnt too good.

Have they changed it so you can use a Phoenix Down on Aeris?

EDIT: I also wish that Western games had such beautiful artwork and character designs. As said above, VIII looked stunning.

I'm pretty sure I have this on the PS1 somewhere. But I didn't get very far, because it was rubbish.

The fact that there is more minigame content in the Gold Saucer casino than in some full games makes it ace. And collecting materia.

It's probably one of those things you can't experience for the first time years after it came out. Or at least, I can't.

I dunno, I played it on PSP about six months or so ago and it held up.

Must admit it had a certain wow factor back in 1997, though.

Except that the first thing that happens after Midgar is Kalm, where the game decides that you need to interactively recap everything that's happened so far in tedious detail for about an hour. Breeding a gold chocobo was less tedious than that. Everything after Kalm is acebest though.

Still got my original PC CDs and box for this downstairs.

Played it through back in the day and thought it was fantastic, although just the once.

Not sure how well all that random fight shit would stand up today though.

No. FFVI is better. VII is still (final) fantastic though.

Received well at Eurogamer.

For £7.99 I might give the old dear another go.

EDIT - Just reading the comments now, they've left the MIDI music in. Woah.

Now, back in the day I had a SoundBlasterAWE32 so the MIDI music actually sounded pretty fucking good. That will not apply today!

Surprised at that. I'd have said it was incredibly accessible compared to a lot of Japanese stuff I've played.

We played the snowboarding game in the saucer for weeks and weeks.

Also, there was a character called Chole. I assume they misspelled Chloe.

It's recordings of MIDI on a softsynth in ogg files. Replacement ogg files using a combination of the OST and emulated miniPSF PS1 music: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12787.150 (download torrent for ogg files only). Using them myself and work perfectly.

That's odd - I remember the PC version getting slated for its MIDI music compared to the PS1's, er, not MIDI music when it came out.

You're right, the original PC release used MIDI and also came with a couple of soundfonts and a Yamaha softsynth thing on the install disc. They changed the rerelease to play back OGG files then included shitty OGG files to make it sound like the original did through a softsynth. Hence people posting about "SHITTY MIDI MUSIC OMFG" are only partly right, and a quick google would lead them to a fix for it.

The people complaining that a 15 year old game looks like a 15 year old game are less likely to be getting help anytime soon.

A fully-redrawn FF7 with the orchestral score would be immense - especially if they morphed both things in during the musical sting when the title card appears.

Wouldn't what it sounded like back in the day depend on what sort of sound card you had?

The cheaper Sound Blasters had crappy MIDI music, I remember that, which is why I invested in a SoundBlasterAWE32 which had proper 'soundbanks' on it (not sure what the real name is) and could thus render MIDI files really well.

It was an expensive card, full length ISA thing with 4MB of RAM on it, proper fancy jobby for the day.

Then when I upgraded to a more modern Sound Blaster, MIDI music had pretty much fallen by the wayside so whatever gubbins they'd put on the AWE32 had been taken off, and MIDI music sounded totally shit again.
