Hello, I would like a laptop that can play the new football manager when its out. I don't really want to spend more than 400 quid, but could stretch to 500 if need be, I don't really know what's out there as I haven't had a computer in over 2 years now.

I got one of these:
HP Pavilion G6-1347ea Laptop, Intel Core i5-2450M 2.5GHz, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15.6" HD LED, DVD±RW, Intel HD, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64
a few months ago, it cost me ~£400. It seems to have been discontinued, but it runs FM 2020 with a shed load of leagues at 5 stars. I suggest that that sort of spec should be way more than enough for most of your needs and should come in on/under budget.

I bet it doesn't run FM2020 very well. Shame we'll have to wait to find out.

Is it better to order online these days or is it just as cheap in shops. But yeah something like that sounds perfect.

In addition to what he asked, I could do with a laptop that will allow web browsing, and use of Word and Excel.

Is there anything I should specifically look for, or indeed specifically avoid?

Anyone other than Kovacs?

:p

The cheapest laptops seem to be 300 quid. Would one of those be okay?

If it is the spec and price you want.

Or look at Dell/Sony referbs if your don't want new.

Laptops at your price range are much a muchness.

I wouldn't not buy one, but I also wouldn't take the recommendation of one from someone who's probably got shares in them. ;)

A cheap laptop is a cheap laptop, in my experience. They're all as good and bad as each other. I've had a good cheap one from Dell (and a bad expensive one from Dell) and a bad cheap one from Toshiba. I'm sure there are people who will say they've had a great Toshiba and a shit Dell.

Just pick the one with the best specs for the price IMO. Look up some benchmarking websites and see how they compare. Or if you can't be arsed doing that then just look in the sale section on various websites, you can get some good discounts on more expensive models that way - I'd say all modern laptops should run FM2012 as it's more CPU and RAM intensive than GPU.

Curio: any modern laptop should run Word, Excel and a web browser, so do the same thing. You're not exactly looking for anything specialist.

I guess my question should really be phrased as:

"Is there any decent benefit from buying a 400 quid laptop, as opposed to a 350 quid one or a 300 quid one?"

Unlikely. For your usage, get the cheapest one possible for the screen size you want.

I really like my Toshiba Satellite that I picked up on a Black Friday deal last november - £450 from £700 I think, which suggests it should be knocking round the £400 price point by now. It has a number pad though, which I know pisses some people off.

This one here

Wow, discontinued but nearest comparable is still knocking around £550+

My satelite was also a bit shit. But that had much to do with not getting a suitable mobile processor in it and the subsequent heat ussues that arose.
My samsung was pretty acebest.
my acer was unreliable but dirt cheap.
My lenovo would be fine but for the stupid way they default the f keys to do things rather than the standard f key function.
(supposedly copied from macbook airs. Why copy the really shit and annoying features?)

Samsung PCs are just cheap Apple II rip-offs anyway. They have a screen, keyboard and mouse and Apple invented all of those.
