Be Excellent To Each Other

I want to get Little Miss Dom (human rogue, lvl 2.5) a tablet for xmas, probably a cheap chinese 7" android jobby which I'll root etc. and probably write some of my own apps for her.
What I need is a case to protect it and make it easier to use. To whit:
Protect it from drops of ~3 foot
Wide enough edges so she doesn't accidentally rest her thumb on the edge of the touchscreen.

However, I am a spack handed monkey wrangler when it comes to sewing, any sort of soft furnishing, so i need some ideas & advice, and possibly some help (tho mother in law is a bit good at sewing, but I'll need a pattern or secret sewing type instructions so she knows what to do)

Further technical issues:
Power button - I want to extend this instead of a teeny little button
Some sort of shock absorbing edges?

I seem to recall Firebox used to sell some magic rubbery putty that you could mould and then I think you baked it and it turned into semi-rigid plastic, which would be ideal to make a whole moulded case from, but they don't sell it any more & I have no idea what it is called. Cos if it does what I think it does then I could just get a load of that and use it to make a whole rubbery case for her:



At the moment I'm not sure what I want or if it's possible, but there's a couple of months to go so if anyone has any ideas that could help (including designs)
