My sister is looking for a computer for starting her uni course in CAD. She wants a really well specced one and is also considering going the mac route, although is unsure about how much hassle that might mean for running CAD programs.

She has just shown me this but is wondering if that's a good deal or if anyone knows of any better. She also wants to know if you can change the colour of the case/lights

So,anyone got any advice or links to throw her way? She doesn't want to spend more than a grand.

Does she know what CAD package she will be using?

All Intel Macs can be dual-booted into Windows, so don't let that put her off. Let the price of them do that. ;)

Depending on the type of CAD she's going to be doing, she doesn't need anything that hardcore.

Not sure what CAD package but windows based. She knows she doesn't need one that powerful but she's treating herself so wants to get one that can handle lots.
What's involved in running windows on a mac, is it easy or does it take a bit of faff?

It's very easy. You need a copy of Windows, obv.

It's easy. But Macs are expensive.

That was my thought, we use Solidworks at my place and although they are decent computers, they are pretty standard HP work horses with extra RAM (4Gb instead of 0.5!)

Okay, how about this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... ubcat=1444
I'd change the case to an Antec 300 Gaming Case and stuck a 120GB SSD into it for £756.20.

If that's the sort of thing she's after, she should spec it all up and then go and find the equivalent system on eBay and save some cash.

When I was at uni the programs we used for CFD (modelling) and coral draw which we used for diagrams were all on the uni computers. Does your sister really need to run the programs at home?
