Someone on here mentioned air shows a whole back? Does anyone know of any upcoming good ones, that aren't too difficult to reach from the midlands or wherever it is I live?

Red Arrows are appreciated (a map of the midlands with red arrows pointing towards it is obvious. Don't do it.)

So we're not going to Bournemouth then? :(

30 Aug-2nd Sept. We've pencilled it in, but we'll have to be back in Nottingham either Sat night or Sun morning. Could take Friday off work? I have no holiday left. Still, we could go after work on Friday and watch it all of Saturday.

Blackpool Airshow 12 Aug.

Doesn't look to be as good a line up as previous years, although there's a Spitfire in there.

Feel free to go to somewhere closer now, as I've been told we can't leave Nottingham that weekend.

Mimi - there's a list of military airshows throughout the uk here http://www.military-airshows.co.uk/listing.htm (sorry I can't do the link thing properly as I'm on my phone)

Unfortunately the Bournemouth airshow is the weekend of my birthday so I'd prefer to be in Nottingham.

By the way, Meems, if you like planes then I heartily recommend the RAF museum in Hendon. Mrs Metal and I spent the entire day there and didn't manage to see it all. Did I mention it's free?

Also the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton but that might be a bit far for you.

Duxford has a good collection but is flipping expensive.

I could have been there the other weekend, you know, except I decided to be ill instead. I've seen a fun picture of some re-enacting friends lined up oblivious to the huge plane behind them. Looked like great fun: hope we go there next year.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I'll check out some of the shows online and will check that link also, Ange

I don't reckon much to Blackpool Airshow, they have it on the seafront late in the afternoon so if it happens to be sunny then you are mostly just squinting at silhouettes flying around, rubbish. Might go to Southport this year, though. Or else just sit on the sand dunes at the end of Blackpool airport for a bit watching them all take off and land.

A slightly bizarre suggestion, but when we went to the US in 2010 we stayed at the Thistle Heathrow. The hotel itself was very average, but its one claim to fame is that the patio for the restaurant and bar faces Runway 09L (with only a rental car lot, one of the perimeter roads and the fence between you and it). We spent the evening absolutely mesmerized by the procession of planes coming in to land.

The planes felt almost close enough to touch and the noise was fantastic.

You really need to check your atlas.
