It's another tech supporty type question.

I'm trying to embed a video in a web page, but the video is not hosted on the FTP site, it is on the user's hard drive (I know. I know).

For security purposes, newer versions of IE prevent you embedding files from a C drive or even putting in an anchor link to a file on the C drive.

There seems to be plenty of info on Google about how to override this in Mozilla browsers using a userprefs.js, but does anyone know how to do it using Internet Explorer. This is on a machine running XP SP2, so even the 'adding the site to trusted zones' fix doesn't work.

Any clues?

What version of IE? I'm fairly sure 7 lets you do it.

Would saving the web page onto his C drive be acceptable?

ActiveX control, probably, but you are going to hit some serious permissions issues.

Alternatively, stick IIS on there (IIS6 works on XP, I think). Or Apache. Then have fun and games setting it up as a sort of website (edit the HOSTS file).

Craster - that option is already ticked.
Grim... - I wish that it were. I can save the web page on to the local page, but the issue then still comes with how to access it. A link on a web page to C:\savedpage.html is still blocked.
Plissken - That's a bit beyond me. I'd have to ask for some more help!

My gut feeling is that there should just be a reg setting somewhere that allows me to override this clearly very useful security setting.

But seriously, it'll save hours in the long run.

The issue isn't space, it's streaming. The user will have the video files copied to their machine, rather than stream it from the web server each time the video is viewed.

Had a look at that, thought it was great, and ultimately disabling the applications mentioned in the registry.... ticks the box from your earlier screenshot. Bum.

Kalmar, Grim... - it's the quality of the line. A 200mb video presentation viewed over a half meg line. It's already been compressed down from about 12 gigs or something stupid.

You've compressed a 200mb file to 12 gigs? You're doing it wrong.

Also, can't they just load the file in a different player?

Is it an internal training video or something? Can't you just push out a few web pages and perhaps a desktop shortcut along with the video file?

Just give everyone a copy of it on DVD? Or just put instructions on the page on how to load it manually into Media Player or something?

This is the way I want to go, but apparently the link to access it has to be on a web page, rather than the user closing their browser to go to the desktop.

I think I'll shelve this one, thanks everyone for the suggestions anyway.

how about the webpage on the server has a link (or some js that loads the local copy after x seconds) to a webpage that is stored on the pc (if you can get the video on the local pc, can't you get a webpage too?) and the embedding is done on that?

Mr Russell says it won't let you link to a local page.

A local page might be easier if you call it an HTA rather than an HTM/HTML/Whatever.

I tried a meta refresh to a locally held html file as well as trying to embed the local html file in an iframe. Do you think calling the local html file .hta would work?

Should work, don't know if it'll solve your issue.
