Amazingly I have never been wirelessly connected with a PC, so am turning to the hive mind to try and find out what I need to buy with regards to a network card.

There's about 8,000 options on eBuyer and I don't know what I want in terms of PCIe, PCI, TP, something something terms. I just want to attach a cheap (tenner?) network card to the PC that has an aerial on it so I can connect to the router without running a wire

What do I need to buy, or what do I need to look at inside my PC to see what will fit/be compatible?

If you want an internal one, it'll almost definitely be PCIe, but you'll need to open up your box to see what free slots you have. You may as well just get a USB dongle, frankly. Pay about £15 and you'll get one that'll do the job.

I'm probably behind the times then - all my internal ones have been just PCI. I'd second the USB route though if you've got the slots for it. I've been using an Edimax Nano for a while now with no issues.

Ensure you get one with a detachable aerial to enable fine tuning of position.

USB versions? This is the future. A much easier future!

The earlier USB Wifi sticks seemed to be pretty cheap and nasty (and ran quite hot too) but the Nano is serving me well. I think I've mentioned this before about this PC, but for some reason, this PC case seems to block any decent wifi signal from internal cards (something I've never encountered before) so I run a USB extension cable away from the PC and have the Nano on the end; looks a bit untidy, but it works.

If only I could have seen this earlier, you could have had mine for free. Though it might not have been such a good one.

Thanks anyway Derek. If this one turns out unsatisfactory I'll take you up on your offer.
