Apparently Valve may be working on a console.

I'd buy it.

Steam in a box? Under the telly?

Sounds good to me.

You'd buy what exactly? If it's going to support all the games on Steam, it's going to have to run Windows. Which sounds a lot like a PC to me.

Not necessarily. There are a number of ways they could make it without it being a PC. They could ask developers to port their games. They could emulate a Windows environment beneath whatever "OS" they decide to use. Or it could be a little Windows box under your telly. If it's affordable and it runs everything available on Steam on my telly for a fair price, I'm in.

Your beloved PC will still have a place in the gaming world. Chill.

Oh I'm not being defensive or anything, and I'm interested to hear what they come up with, but if it is just a PC designed to fit under your telly, it's not all that exciting. We've had them for years.

I'm open to the possibility of it being something more than just that, but if "Playing all your Steam games" is a feature it has, it pretty much has to be running Windows.

It'll be a PC, I'd imagine, but with APIs for specific hardware support (so a standard gamepad, for example), and with a specific hardware spec (so like a console), with devs optimising games for it. There's mileage in this concept beyond "it's just a PC under the telly", and in any event I don't think "PCs under the telly" is the mainstream concept you think it is. If anyone could make this work, it's Valve. I'm interested.

Should rumors be believed, the Alienware X51 has already been developed to Steam Box standards and will be retroactively infused with Valve's software once it becomes available.

So £600 quid ish?

"sources" claim that mood-tracking biometric systems will be implemented into the system, either in the form of bracelets or directly into Steam Box controllers. This would allow a game to measure the player's pulse rate and galvanic skin response, the gameplay/design implications of which are numerous.

Or if you're ill. Or if it's summer. Or dead. I hope I get to wear 3D glasses to play my games as well as a special bracelet.

I dunno, I can't see it being appealing to many people unless it costs a similar amount to a current PS3.

If you're going to spend more than that then why not buy an actual PC instead?
