Imagine for one second that for some reason you wake up buried alive. Not in a coffin or any other kind of container, just your body in the earth to a depth of, say, six feet.

How do you know which way 'up' is? I was just listening to an audiobook with this scenario, and I wondered if the sense of weight and gravity of the body might be confused by the weight of soil piled upon it, somehow cancelling it out?

Any idea?

Presumably the gasp of shock as you wake up would tell you - if loads of soil falls into your throat and chokes you to death, you were facing up.

If you reflexively breathe in a load of soil into your throat, and you choke to death, you were facing down.

Presumably the same rules as being buried in snow apply.
Except you'd suffocate quicker.

Plant a seed and see which way it grows.

Move your head back and forth to create a pocket of air around your mouth. That in itself won't necessarily guide you as to which way is up as the earth would harden under compression. However, you then dribble and determine whether you get a wet cheek, forehead, chin, or no body part at all. That way is downish.

Piss yourself and see where it feels wet.

I doubt it. I dug a six foot hole and put him in it before back-filling with soil.

But I put him in feet-first, so he's only buried up to just above the knee.

Aparently there's a witch buried vertically but upside down around these parts. That was to disorientate her if she tried to claw her way out. Ah here you go:

That wouldn't stop Grim... running up to her and trying to punch her in the face.

From that witch link, does anyone else think the little red guy in the banner looks like Zardoz?

Mimi! I don't think anyone should be buried in earth no matter their orientation.

I believe the same advice for being caught in an avalanche would apply. Do a wee and feel which way it runs.

But you'd choke on soil and suffocate before thinking of that or having the chance to try.
