Can you guys recommend any, what do you use?

The Samsonite B-Lite Spinner is the best bag you can get in terms of weight vs quality vs cost. It's what the vast majority of cabin crew go for. £150ish.

If you're going to get Samsonite, get it from one of their outlet stores, as they often do everything half price. No idea whether there's one near you.

It all depends on how much you are going to use it. That Samsonite I linked to is pretty much the best of the best, but if you are using it 2 or 3 times a week it needs to be. If you are only going to use a bag a few times a year you could get away with something for under a hundred.

Plus I think 4 wheels are girly, I am not keen on wheeling most things, but needs must...

You can buy the b-lite with only 2 wheels if you like, if you want extra man-points

When I flew hunners I checked in a holdall & flung stuff I cared about in a wee rucksack to carry on the plane (at either end I would carry it in the holdall). Anything else was heavy, shite for getting to/from/through airports in a hurry or flimsy shite that fell apart.

This is for when i don't want hold luggage. A few days away etc

How often do you do that?
If it's not a lot, I'd just use my backpack.

Given your last "good" bag broke after 3 months, you might not want to spend too much on its replacement!

Even if it is a lot I'd still take a backpack over a case/wheelybag. They're light, sturdy & easy to carry swiftly to/from/through airports.

I might be more with work, plus away with work in uk every week. I am after one bag i can have permanently filled for travel...

I have 2 laptop bags, so a wheel one would be better.

I use rucksacks, but ones designed for purpose. One has a padded laptop section and plenty of room for documents, the other has room for cameras and lenses.

I think I will have a look at an outlet village this weekend.

I started a new job that involves a lot of flying in February. Generally, most trips are one to three nights stay and I like to travel light and with least amount of hassle so can't be doing with checking-in luggage. I got this pull-along which has so far suited me very well. It's the approved size for taking into the cabin on BA flights. It has enough space for a suit folded into itself, a few changes of clothes and pair of shoes. Seems to be pretty sturdy and has a neat TSA lock.

In practice, people do take slightly larger cases onboard and the overheard lockers always have at least 10cm more space above my case when it is placed in them.

I hook the handles of my laptop bag over the pull-out handle on the case and it sits quite neatly on top as I mince through the airport.

In my experience working in an airport, hard shell luggage like that is more likely to sustain damage. Even the more rigid cases with a fabricy outside seemed to fare better when it came to claims. I have a pair of soft fabric suitcases (also by Samsonite) and they must have been in my family's service for two decades now and are only now showing significant wear and tear.

Hard case for the hold, fabric sided case for the cabin, samsonite for both, is the recommendation from BA for their cabin crew.

Me too, but used a hundred times a year they are necessary for the hold, for both durability and protection against being cut open and robbed from.

Can't you order one through SmartBuy at work, Kovacs? I have a rucksack with a hard base with wheels and a handle (you can detach the straps as well). I pretty much take it everywhere.

I always put everything in a suitcase in the hold, even my laptop (in its own bag)

This way you avoid having to measure out liquids and the wait for your bag at other side is only 10 mins max in most cases.
