The 5 Elmo's on our NAS are doing my head in so I'd like to rip some of the DVDs to stick on the NAS
I've had some very annoying experiences before, so what software do you recommend?

DVD decrypter and DVD shrink used to be my programs of choice, but that was a few years back and things may have moved on a bit.

RipIt4Me is great. That manages both DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink to give you the most efficient backing up process I have found.

It has only failed with really new DVDs that seem to fool it into thinking the discs are 100s o GB large. But generally fine.

DVD decrypter and Handbrake will give you a nice iTunes compliant mp4 file.

Thanks guys, I'm not sure the nas handles mp4 very well
to be honest the nas is super a concept (for the tv watching and for use as a printserver) but it was very cheap and we're looking for a different setup that would do the same but do it better. there are loads of files it refuses to play and you can't fast forward etc and it regularly goes jittery and out of sync.
we just dont have much experience with these things so we dont know what to buy yet

that said, I still want to rip a load of dvd's to stick on it so I will investigate the software you guys mentioned, thanks! :D

What are you using to get the files from the NAS to the TV? Xbox? Straight into the telly?

the tv is connected to the internet box thingy and can see the NAS
the tv can also see steves pc, and some things that dont play on the nas do play from steves pc (running windows media player)
the nas has something weird like twonky (?) and it doesnt look like you can change the software on there
we're happy to replace it but we don't know what with

It sounds like the one I've got - Twonky is fairly good but often (as you say) has troubles rewinding / fast forwarding.
If you have a Samsung TV, you could try this: http://my.opera.com/BennyGr/blog/samsun ... mit-twonky (or go nuts with http://sourceforge.net/projects/samygo/ )
