Who is on steam? I am on steam. I have bought no games yet. Is it as good as XBox live for friends/achievements stuff? How does it differ? What's going on?

I'm off for a sandwich.

I'm on steam but like you, have also bought no games for it.

I think I'm TheXboxVision on there.

Steam is ace, and in someways* is probably better than xbox live. Anyway, theres a beex group on there somewhere.

If you cant find it I am sure someone can send you a link.

*Mainly, its free.

Steam is the saviour of PC gaming, but like all things related to PCs and gaming, there's plenty of idiots who disagree.

I'm Zio360 on Steam and we have a Beex community group!

Steam indeed has achievements, cloud-based saving, text and voice chat, although the first two there have to be actually supported by the game in question. More and more game do support Steam functions though and it's very much becoming the Xbox Live of the PC world.

Of course, the best bit is the sales, but there's not likely to be one till later in the year. They tend to be amazing though, you can get some proper bargains in them.

I've got Steam from back when I bought the Half-Life 2 pack (2004?). It's changed a lot since then - I remember having to buy it in US$.

I can't remember the name of our group, but it's not IBeex. Add me as a friend and look through my profile, it's the only group I'm a member of (I think).

Really? I'm a bit surprised by this. Sure you don't just need to have games in your library? You can add games you already own to your Steam library.

I'm consolemad on there, but I've not been on in a bit. I was struggling to get my Xbox wireless pad to work (Out Run is a bit too tricky to play using a keyboard) but once I get that sorted, hopefully this week, I should be on a bit more.

Can't you just download a free game? Like Alien Swarm?

Tried adding my existing games, no dice.

Quote:
Question
My Steam account is missing some Community features and/or is showing up as a limited user. What does this mean?
Answer
Why are some features of Steam not available to me?

Limited users are not able to send friend invites or initiate chat sessions. We've chosen to limit access to these features as a means of protecting our customers from those who abuse Steam merely for evil purposes such as spamming and phishing. Spammers' and phishers' ability to send pesky invites and chat requests to strangers is thereby reduced, protecting legitimate users from annoyance and scams.
The good news is that other features are still available. Limited users can still create community groups, be added as friends, and even chat with other users. Please note that limited users must navigate to their Steam community homepages in order to view friend requests.
How can I gain access to all Steam features?

To access all features of Steam, simply purchase a game from the Steam store, redeem a Gift or Guest Pass* on Steam, or activate a retail game on Steam.
* Access to features may be limited to the duration of the Guest Pass.

Can I gain access to these features by playing free demos, adding a non-Steam game as a shortcut, or promotional trials like Free Weekends?

No. Demos, Free Weekends, free games (example/ Alien Swarm), and other promotions do not act as qualifying items.

Valve can suck my fucking balls. It's no wonder I abandoned my PC for consoles.

Do you not own a copy of the original Half-Life? Is there anyone who doesn't? Put the CD key in if you do!

I suppose they kind of have a point about stopping it from being abused, but that's still properly shit.

Ah well. Wait till the sales. There's bound to be something you'll want for a ridiculously cheap price.

Also, you're complaining about not being able to use features that without any games, you don't even need! That's like buying a console without any games and complaining that it isn't a brilliant communications device!

Pretty sure there are games on the store for under a quid, too. You can use PayPal as well! But like I say, I've been using Steam since its inception, mainly with my original Half-Life CD key. I assumed everyone in the world had a copy...

Besides which, it states that full members can add you as friends, you just can't initiate a friend request. Tell us what your username is on there and we'll add you. Or at least I will.

Well, quite. It'd be like logging onto Xbox Live via the website without owning an Xbox. Even if it worked, there'd be nothing much meaningful it could do.

I've got a Steam digital key for Half-Life 2: Episode 1 that I've had since it came out (it's a bit like a Steam Gift Voucher, I guess). No-one wants it. I can send it to you, and then you'll have a game!

It's more like not being able to talk to your friends on Live/PSN without downloading a game from their marketplace.

All I've ever really used it for was seeing who was around for a game of Defcon or Race 07. Neither of which I bought off steam.

I'm governmentyard on steam, and everywhere. Feel free to add me.

Being dolescum, I'm not in the position to buy games presently, my intention was to jump into the community, watch what people play, then buy stuff once I'm earning again and know what people are into multiplayering on steam. You know, instead of just pirating everything. This early joining was to make sure I've got a little remindy icon on my desktop for later, otherwise I'll just get a shedload of 360 stuff and continue ignoring the PC games market, which I'm trying not to do... seeing as I've got this here gaming rig and never game on it.

I have got HL2 - for the PS2. I've also got portal, Ep. 1 etc for 360 in the Orange Box... so those with the kind offers please save 'em for anyone who lacks an Orange box... I'm sure some reader of this thread will be glad to take them off your hands.

Thinking about it, I used to have Half Life for PC... but it wouldn't run so I had to pirate it. Gave the disk away in the end.

Question though - some games on Windows I know you can get Live achievements for, like Fallout 3. Is this only via Games for Windows live, or if I download that game from steam, can I get proper achievements off it as well as Steam ones, either automagically or by having Games for Windows Live on my HD without having to buy anything through its sorry, broken ass?

Xbox Live achievements are only present in Games For Windows titles, such as Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 5 and Fallout 3 (though there are plenty of others). The Steam versions of these games simultaneously use Games For Windows, so yes, Xbox Live achievements in compatible games still work even if you bought the game from Steam.

Edit: however, download and install the Games For Windows Marketplace client direct from Microsoft before downloading a Games For Windows game from Steam. For some very strange reason (glances over at Microsoft's ailing Marketplace, struggling as it is against the Steam behemoth), the Games For Windows client no longer seems to install properly if done from within Steam. Strange that.

If you're not lucky enough to be in a better position financially come December, I strongly urge you to keep well away from Steam at that time. Or indeed, any of its competitors like gamersgate and impulse. The sales are obscenely tempting.

I bought Half Life in 1998. It's almost as if they knew I'd be needing the cd key 13 years on. Amazing.

It also helps that I'm a hoarder.

If you have a cd key you might be able to link it to steam then d/l mac version from there. On steam if you buy pc version you get mac version for free and vice versa

Up to four player Magicka and ninja robot death match Plain Sight are both on sale on Steam this weekend. Maybe this is a good opportunity for the beteo group to actually do something on there?

I'll buy a few copies to share, if it helps.

Why? They've been banging on about it for years, it's their "Duke Nukem: Who Fucking Cares What It Was Called"

I'll get excited when they release a playable demo. Very excited. I might even soil myself.

Okay, don't get excited about it until there's a demo. I retract my "get excited" statement and wish to replace it with "hey, look at this thing that someone is working on".

I'm waiting until I can actually play it to do so, mind.
