Joss Whedon has completed a secret Shakespeare adaptation.

The Avengers director adapted, cast, directed and filmed a movie version of Much Ado About Nothing entirely in secret, reports The Wrap.

A website launched on Sunday night was the first announcement that the film had ever been in production, revealing that the movie "based on a play" has finished principal photography.

The cast includes many of Whedon's former collaborators, including Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Sean Maher (Firefly), Tom Lenk (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Amy Acker (Angel).

"Surprise! We just wrapped today..." wrote Maher on Twitter.

"I promise you it's the real deal and we're VERY excited about it!"

"Oh, it's real," Fillion added from his account. "Very. Very. Real."

Much Ado About Nothing is about the trials that face two pairs of lovers. While Benedick and Beatrice cannot stop confessing their love to one another, Claudio and Hero are shy and rendered practically speechless.

The independent film is yet to secure distribution.

Hmmm.

Given that this was already done quite well by Luvvie & Luvvie & Co a good few years back, I'd prefer he'd turned his most excellent pen towards something that hadn't already had a high profile adaptation.

EDIT - UNLESS, of course, this is a "10 Things I Hate About You" type "adaptation". In which case rock on.

Still, will deffo be watching it, if it actually gets released.

18 years ago, and I hardly expect a Whedon version to bear much relation to a Branagh version. It has a man with a snorkel, for example.

Given that it's been done entirely under the radar and without any distribution deal in place, this is logically very much a "for the love" type project. And it's Whedon, so I think I expect quirkiness.

Maybe related:

Quote:
In reminiscing about "Buffy," [Spike actor James] Marsters recalls how the cast and crew would get together at Whedon's house to do readings of Shakespeare plays.

"Tony Head was Richard the Third. [Joss] got to do Hamlet. Alexis Denisof did a Bottom in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' that just rocked, best Bottom I'd ever seen," he says. "After the Shakespeare reading, out would come the wine and we'd have a little party. And then one day I brought my guitar. We started playing songs, and Joss started playing songs on the piano. Joss says that that was the beginning of him thinking of a musical for 'Buffy.'"

That was my point - I'm hoping for a 10 things I hate about you type adaptation, which I suspect it is.

This is probably my favourite Shakespeare play. Even Keanu managed to almost act in it. So I'm happy.

I don't believe I've ever seen Much Ado About Nothing. Twelfth Night is my favoritest.

Yeah, you hadn't written that when I replied.

Fucking hell, he's the slim lovechild of Grim... and Craster. No wonder you all bum him in the face.
