So, as of 1st March, the Advertising Standards Agency's remit is being expanded to include online advertising.

http://www.asa.org.uk/Media-Centre/2011 ... iness.aspx

Quote:
From 1 March, marketing communications on companies’ own websites and in other third party space under their control, such as Facebook and Twitter, will have to adhere to the non-broadcast advertising rules as set out in the CAP Code.

I initially thought 'meh', but as I considered it I realised that this is potentially pretty big. Pretty much every company, from single man outfits selling stuff out of their shed to big multinationals have an online presence, and that's a much bigger sphere of influence than just the existing print/tv/radio media. The internet is packed with marketting material that's bordering on outright lies, and I think this is going to cause quite the shake up.

Sure, it only applies to stuff based in the UK. I'd be interested to know if it covers companies in the UK hosting websites outside the UK mind.

Will it put a stop to those "shock new report about X"? I mean, I like looking at that French newsreader but...

The one were it shows you a colour blindness test and claims it is for IQ is another favourite.

I frankly don't think they go far enough, since pretty much all advertising is nothing but lies anyway. But I am concerned - does this mean they're going to shut down Andy Kadir-Buxton? :(

Edit: I've just checked, and his newest thing is a counter reading "DAYS TO CHRISTMAS!!!". It's currently on 727. Oh, Andy

I hope it doesn't, he's superb.

A genuine halo is the reward.

Orgasm from masturbation has been found to relieve the painful symptoms of menstrual cramps. Whilst it is not always convenient to masturbate for the necessary five minutes until the pain subsides, hands free masturbation is still possible. In order to do this one simply has to clench and then relax the vagina repeatedly for five minutes. With this method no one need know of the discomfort being suffered, and the pain soon goes.

Do not try this whilst driving or operating heavy machinery.

Mirror, signal, clench....

Advertising isn't just inserted ads. It's what a website tells you about a product it's trying to sell you.

That website is awesome! They have a disclaimer stating that the facts on the website can be made up, and if they are, tough shit! Brilliant.

The ASA are a bunch of twats. I've had plenty of dealings with them via one of my earlier employers.

Anyway - the whole "own website" thing really doesn't work. It's a self-regulatory system. The only real way they got to enforce their powers over advertising is because if you don't play ball Clearwater or whoever will be required not to put up your ads. When it comes to some schmucks running a website about homeopathy, or a local company handing out flyers, they can just ignore it. Granted, there is an ultimate sanction of them going to the OFT, but they haven't done that to my knowledge, even for some of the proper pisstakers like Ryanair. So the ASA remains a pompous bunch of humourless cunts.
