Get the Bold, ideally the 9780 Bold 2. The Torch is a piece of shit, the Curve is the same as the Bold but with cheaper components.

Specifically: Does she want a Blackberry, or a phone that can deal with emails?

the sync on my blackberry curve is shite. Years old emails sometimes randomly reappear, although this could be work related. It certainly wouldn't be my choice if it wasn't provided by work.

No, no - you don't understand. When it comes to the colour the living room should be painted, she's right and you're wrong. When it comes to technology purchases, that's firmly your job. Don't forget - she's not just buying a phone, she's also contracting your support services for the lifespan of that phone.

Get an iPhone.

I have an old bold 9000 from work and it's shit. I hope the newer ones are better??

If I were to buy a phone it would be the iPhone, no question.
There seems to be no real advantage of a blackberry over the iPhone other than the input technique on a non touchscreen bb

I want to disagree with this, I always make my own informed choice when it comes to my phone. However, I must admit that if it's not doing something it should, or doing something it shouldn't I can't be arsed with it and just chuck it at Joans. I don't know that I still would if he wasn't as into Android as he is, or if I had an iPhone or Blackberry, to be honest I could probably sort it out myself. But hey, he fixes my phone, I iron his t-shirts - seems fair to me. :)

Oh, therefore, Grim...'s and Craster's posts are both fair points.

Exactly, I really can't. As much as I'm not a girly girl and can be a geeky as I like, I just can't be arsed with it. You are spot on with your observations. I just want to be able to use my phone, I can't be bothered with the making it do (or not do) stuff part (I've got a Joans for that :P ). :D

well that was a bit the intention...

discussed this with my wife.. and cost aspect is part of it... i do think she would like a blackberry though, the keys and stuff, although she now says that she thinks an iphone would be nice but expensive...maybe android would be better then..

Androids with physical keyboards exist - they're better in some cases than the smaller blackberries as the keys are bigger.
If that's a requirement, show her something like http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN ... ocaleId=33

If you can get the Samsung Epic in your country, I think that's a good one too.

The Carphone Warehouse site is useful for this - you can filter the phone finder (Monthy / PAYG) to just show Andoids with Qwerty keyboards.

well, she bought a white 9780 in the end, arrived yesterday.. spend an hour installing gmail on it, as it took some time to find this weird setting/feature/bug
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/G ... ebbb&hl=en

(she's happy whatsapping and mailing with her now.. the young women demographic is here far more important for RIM than you would imagine for a corporate aimed phone..)

It's not great, but it's not that bad.

I am looking forward to my contract expiring in February though.

Edit: Er, I'm not Mrs Romanista, I just have a Samsung Jet s8000.

The 9780 is a great Blackberry. A Blackberry is still the wrong choice though :p
