Desert Island DVDs

You have been marooned on a desert island, and a genie appears with a 50" LCD tv and a wish of one movie boxset and 5 single movies.

What would you pick? Not necessarily your alltime faves but films you can watch over and over again without getting bored of them?

My boxset would be the Rocky series, because they are the greatest series of films ever made (except 5!)

The other 3 would be Point Break, Leon, American history x, the Green mile and casino.

Boxset: Star Wars (Original Trilogy - the prequels are dead to me)

I considered saying The Princess Bride too, but thought Mimi might find that a bit spooky.

Life Aquatic is my favourite re-watchable film because at first you see the film is fairly layered, then you realise it's the best mixtape music video ever.

There's a Powell & Pressburger boxset, so I'd go for that. Among a few lesser films it contains:

A Cantebury Tale
The Forty-Ninth Parralell

As my favourite film-makers and being some of the most beautiful and human films ever made, I'd be fair chuffed with that. The additional five would be:

TV would be fine, as I contemplated the Frasier boxset with about 11 series in it because its one of the most finely written consistently funny shows ever made, and it would pass a lot of time on a desert island!

Surprised no-ones mentioned a porno so they'd have sommat to bash off to!

There's a Powell & Pressburger boxset, so I'd go for that. Among a few lesser films it contains:

I Know Where I'm Going - [Contains the most oddly beautiful woman in kino history, Pamela Brown.)
Black Narcissus - [Lush mentalness with nuns in Nepal!]
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - [Probably the most touching friendship in film, and mythic.]
Tales of Hoffman - [Great opera, great visuals]
A Matter of Life and Death - [Arguably my all time fave film, though Blimp and Cantebury run close.]
A Cantebury Tale - [The greatest pilgramige on film, only with an American GI in WWII England.]
The Forty-Ninth Parralell - [Eric Portman and Leslie Howard at their best. Nazi's on the run in WWII Canada.]

Porco Rosso - [Infalibly makes me cry in the cloud plain scene, best cartoon to my mind.]

Tree of Life - [Creation of the universe. Lush Texas 60's suburbia visuals. So much story you could invent yourself to fit within it's near dialogue-free nature. Jessica Chastain is astonishingly gorge and red-headed.]
Fargo - [Funny, dark, atmospheric. Probably one of the best films ever made. Best heroine at any rate.]

Band of Brothers - [Shoot bang bang and great characters equals moving fun.]
Twin Peaks - [C'mon, do I have to say why?]
The Complete Wire - [Again, it's The Wire.]

I'd go for:

Withnail & I - I just never tire of watching this film, and I love the music, it would be a good companion on my desert island

N.A.R.C. - Not exactly cheerful, but soooo rewatchable.

The Big Lebowski - This would relax me in my solitude.

Layer Cake - For some reason I always watch this film every few months, so it would be a good option.

Aliens Director's Cut - This might be a bit scary so I would only watch it during the day.

Boxset - Friends - One of the best comedies ever! If that's not allowed 'cause it's telly, then tough, I will sneak it onto my island in my underpants.

Or the X Files, but I'd throw any episodes after Duchovny's exit from the show into the sea and hope that sharks ate them.

The X-Files really hasn't aged well.

My five single movies would be The Lion King, Ace Ventura, Event Horizon, the special "one disc" version of Kill Bill, and Shipwrecked. For the ironing.

The boxset is giving me troubles... The Omen is probably too scary to watch alone in a strange environment... Terminator films go a bit crap after the first two, although the female casting of T3 has its merits... so I'm probably left with Back to the Future as well. Maybe a Saw boxset instead, although I don't have one so how I can logically prioritise it above the others I'm not sure.

Reglah fillums: Rain Man, Usual Suspects, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, maybe Seven Pounds? Not sure I'm really covering all bases though, not a lot to laugh at... but then "comedy" films are usually wank.

For the boxset, I'd have to go with NervousPete and choose the Powell and Pressburger set, a pair of auteurs I'd never heard of until the Nervous one introduced me to them. Trust me, you need to watch these films. They are just extraordinary, original, touching and nothing like them has been made since. Do yourselves a favour and check out "A Matter of Life and Death" next time it's on the box. It's perfect in every way.

I am now upset that I have to leave the James Bond Boxset behind.
