Want a media streamer. Squeezebox looks cheap and functional. Anyone have any experience of them?

I'll take that as a no.

Anyone use anything other than a Squeezebox for streaming audio around the house? That isn't an Airport?

My Android phone. Twonky for music on the network and Tunein for internet radio.
Although I might try and find something other than twonky as it seems a tad overkill for what I use it for and is slow to start.
I had been looking at a squeezebox for years but am now eyeing up bluetooth speakers.

I was initially looking at Bluetooth, but I was put off that idea on the grounds that:

1) Why bother having the phone in the mix - if the speaker device is on your network, it can get your music from wherever it's currently sitting and has direct access to internet radio. All having your phone involved means is more battery drain.
2) I'd want to be able to play my music or the wife's music depending on who was in the kitchen at the time. Most bluetooth setups seem to struggle with pairing two devices and easily switching between them.

A colleague of mine has some number of Sonos streamers and he loves them to bits.

I do use my Boxee box to stream audio from my NAS.
It's fucking awful at it, so don't use that.

HTH.

That was the other range I was looking at. Pricier though.

Hurrah! No specific questions, just good to know that they don't fall apart after three months, or whatever.

As the lone user in the house of this possible set up I'm more attracted to the flexibility.
I'm disappointed at how little kit there is for this sort of thing. There is squeezebox and sonos but little else.

I've looked at getting a Squeezebox before and they look very good. Most of the reviews I've seen are positive and my personal experience of Logitech products are that they are very good for the price. I was particularly impressed* by the sound generated by the Z5500 system I used to have.

*Except for it packing in after 2 years. The speakers still work fine, its just the sub/amp that stopped working for some reason.

They can do Spotify too, which is a big plus for me. I nearly bought some once. Didn't.

More at 11!

I was going to get a Pure One Flow so we could listen to music anywhere in the house or garden, by taking the little radio unit with us (it can do FM/DAB/internet radio/stream from NAS).

But really, we wouldn't have used it much so i didn't get one. But now, I think I want one again - curse you!

I bought the wife this for Christmas

http://www.homevisionuk.com/acatalog/co ... Radio.html

It does, IPOD, USB, Internet and DAB Radio and will pull music over the network from XBMC and Twonkey, cost about £250

Initial testing would suggest that the Squeezebox is absolutely fucking superb.

That's why you're not going to the quiz - you're playing with technology!

Well, that beats my "two years from seeing Airport Expresses at the Doc's to getting it working reliably" somewhat.

Tch, yeah, but the squeeze box doesn't cure cancer.

I picked it up at around 2PM. It was set up and working by 3PM, and customised to my satisfaction (including setting up the iPad and WP7 apps that accompany it) by 4PM. What a neat little bit of kit.
