They can't. In 1287, the Finns came down, had a big fight and stole them all.

Väestökeskittymä!

They also stole the habit of stringing several words together to form ridiculously long ones.

For example, sähköpääkeskus means electric-head-cupboard. I don't know why that sticks in my mind.

Google Translate just spells it out, even though it lists Welsh as one of the languages it can translate.

Google Translate dim ond cyfnodau allan, er ei fod yn rhestru Gymraeg fel un o ieithoedd y gall gyfieithu.

Is that an electric cupboard for heads, or a cupboard for electric heads? I'm intrigued by this Finnish cupboarding technology.

'div', not 'diff'. Single 'f' is a 'v' sound, double 'ff' is an 'f' sound. Other than that I think Grim... is right (although my Welsh isn't exactly top notch).

Phew, good job I took that Welsh learners course, eh?

Phonetically, pronounce it as Glyn-dove-red-oi-e (very fast).

Tricky one, I know!

How is Rhyl pronounced, for that matter? Everyone in the NW says "Rill", but a heavily inebriated Welsh chap once told me it was more like "Rhile".

My favourite ignorant English pronunciation of a Welsh place name is "Betsy Code".

The Welsh need to grow up and start using real words.

Keeping them in the dark ages isn't helping anyone.

Doc's right there. The 'wy' is an 'oo-ee' sound said fast, too. And apparently you roll those r's. Which I can't do. Damn.

Glyn-dove-rre-doi-ee. Glyndoverredoiee. Very fast. Ran it past the Welsh Librarian, she says that's the way.

Are you saying the red as RED or erred?
I would say it as glyn-dov-erd-oiee, but I know north welsh, not south welsh.

Ahh, my librarian is South Welsh. I'd go for yours then.

Well, it has been a long time since I really spoke any, and there isn't really that much difference between the two pronunciations!
Did you know the Welsh National Anthem is different in NW to SW? Not really my definition of "national"!

Yes, there is no formal distinction what does and doesn't constitute a nation.

Glyndyfrdwy is pronounced, by the locals, as Glinn-DUFF-ed-wee. Or, more commonly, Glyn.

Since we did so well with that one, try this...
