Alone in the Wilderness is a documentary about Richard Proenneke, an American chap who at the age of 51 (in 1968), retired and buggered off to Alaska to more or less live entirely off the land in the arse end of nowhere. He builds a log cabin from scratch and is generally awesome. He wound up living in his cabin for over 30 years. It's available from all good retailers*, and definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it before. It's so relaxing and the woodwork he does is the ultimate in satisfying TV viewing. It's basically real life Minecraft!

Here's his cabin (still standing today):

There's a guy who lives in Yellowstone over winter, and he's the only guy in the whole park. His job is to clear snow off the rooves of buildings to they don't collapse. He's on his own with the park to himself for 4 months of the year.

I've seen that several times now, it's ace. The blocks of snow he shifts are amazing.

What a great film about a wilderness hero. Gives me man-shame that I couldn't hope to do any of that, at least not effectively. Double shame for it reminding me of playing with blocks in Minecraft, rather than doing proper outdoors stuff.

Hello! I couldn't find an introduction thread so I've lurked for a bit, then started butting in.

There is an intro thread somewhere, but you're better off jumping in anyway.
