This probably isn't of interest to many, but I've spent all day doing it, and I took photos, so nyer.

Today we stripped down and redid the first aquarium we bought, because we've learned a lot since we first started off with fish, and felt that something of a reboot was needed.

So, it looked like this to start with (partway through getting the water out)

Image

A little while later, all the fish and shrimp were in buckets, and all the plants and wood were out. The gravel was taken out and chucked and replaced with stuff designed for plants

Image

Then in go the new wood and rocks, with some plants already attached, and a second layer of substrate

Image

Then all the rest of the plants go in

Image

And then finally, the water is readded and the fish go back in.

Image

The bubbles will clear in a day or so, then it's just a case of waiting a few weeks for the plants to grow in, they do look a little sparse right now.

lovely. I really love aquariums, and i once took this hobby quite serious (when i was about in the 8th grade) and had a 120lt tank. That one ended in tragedy as one day it exploded (yes, just like that). My "hammerhead shark" was decapitated by the glass. It was fish and water all over the floor. When i was a kid my father had one tank that was 2 meters long just for Cichlidae (those african lake big fish...don't know if it is the correct name). We had an Oscar that was smarter than many dogs.

I want to get into it once again, but its a bit harder now, that i don't have anyone near to take care of it when i'm on holidays.

I see that you have those lovely half-blue small tetras. Love those. Have you never had Java Moss in the tank? That is awesome, great for small fish to eat and be protected, and grows really fast.

There was a load of moss in the original tank, mostly hidden from view in that picture. In the new setup there is moss on the ends of the branches. Only a little bit now, but as you say it's a pretty fast grower.

i always took a bit of it to put in the hatcheries. Once the small fish started disappearing. I had to see what's going on and some sort of insect like critter was on the moss. It was transparent with a bit of glow and looked liked a mixture between a spider and a mosquito. It was really disgusting and beautiful at the same time, looked a bit alien. It was eating the fish for some time and it was very hard to spot.

My cousin was so in awe with the critter that i gave him it. I was glad to be rid of it.

Poor mr Pynfolds and Iiona don't have any plants in their tank.
Still, they seem happy enough.

My dad has one! Unfortunately he hasn't added any fish recently and they're gradually whittling down as they get old and die. He's working in Moscow, y'see? I'll take a pic though, in a bit...

Craster will be along shortly, no doubt.

Miss Malabar keeps fish, but only cold-water ones. One of her fish had a black mark around its mouth, in the shape of a handlebar moustache; we named him/her Hogan. But now it's started shrinking as the fish has aged, and has ended up as a dirty little French 'tache; we've renamed him Poirot now. But I think it's going to keep shrinking, and we're probably going to end up calling him Adolf.

Hope this helps!

Awesome Craster. Hi-Rez next please so we can actually see the fist.

Used to have a 60ltr (I think) fish tank when I was a kid, but I move so often that I can't have any at the moment.

BUT ONE DAY.

EDIT: well there is no way I'm changing that typo.
