The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Cameron, has upset some people for telling Angela Eagle to "Calm down, dear" at PMQ's. You can watch it here.

Ms Eagle has said:

Quote:
"I don't think a modern man would have expressed himself that way. What I was trying to do was point out that he had got some facts wrong...I have been patronised by better people than the prime minister."

presumably before shrieking, jumping up onto a chair and holding her petticoats up upon seeing a small rodent like creature which turned out to be the deputy PM.

Ed Balls (He's the labour leader. No, really - Ed) has said that if he'd made a comment like that to his wife, she would have

Quote:
..clocked me one

Simultaneously making the point that he couldn't beat Yvette Cooper in a fistfight, and he probably often thinks about saying that.

Danny Alexander, the ginger haired, four eyed freak, who has reportedly been headhunter for the role of Beaker in the new live action Muppets film (Clegg's done that one already - Ed)tried to ease over the controvery by saying:

Quote:
If it has caused offence, obviously that was not right and I hope it hasn't caused offence... because it was a joke. Meep meep meep meep

So, is "Calm down, dear" deeply patronising, or (soemthing else - Legal Ed)

I think it was probably meant to be insulting and patronising, but mostly it's the sort of thing that only a massive wanker would say.

It's ok if you're referencing that Michael Winner advert, otherwise it's a bit patronising I think. More because it sounds like a fob off that isn't taking the person seriously than down to any sort of sexism, mind.

I'm guessing it was at that daily bit of shite patter. Dobbers at opposite sides of a room calling each other cunts while the backbenchers sook everyone off? (PMQs)

None of them can debate/argue worth a fuck, so it's no exactly a surprise that Camoron's not bright enough to realise that pushing aside an angry wifey with "Calm down dear" is asking for bother.

Patronising? Aye. Suicidal? That too.

He's a politician. It's a pop culture reference from about 10 years ago. Of course he was just trying to be cool. That's how they 'get down, yo all' with their 'crew homies', see.

Big overreaction from the woman, though. The "me too!" from Ed Balls is as pathetic and greasey as ... well, as everything Ed Balls does.

The proper response would be "fuck off, cameron, you pie-faced twunt."

It's not really either of those things - just a bit pathetic and unfunny.

I can't vote on this because there isn't an 'it depends' option.

I'd say it very much depends on the tone and circumstances in which it's said.

I answered in relation to the tone and circumstances of the video.

Politicians in the House used to quote the Bible and Milton and Shakespeare. That fact that they're now quoting Michael Winner from an insurance ad shows how far we've fallen. He may well have just come back with a "Your mum" joke.

I had to vote "not deeply insulting/patronising" even though I think it is a bit, because the word "deeply" skews the poll an awful lot.

I was going to do that, but when I looked at the question again the video wasn't mentioned, thus I was stymied.

The video is in the first paragraph, but it's 32 minutes long, so I couldn't be arsed finding the section.
