It gets to the windows loading screen with the scrolly bar thing going across but barely lasts a few seconds before I get a blue screen telling me of some unspecified error. Except it does have a cryptic error code of course. Maybe I should write that down.
It all went wrong when I put the PC onto standby and re-connected a DVD drive. Undoubtedly a big mistake. It went back into windows no problem afterwards but after a restart I get the blue screen error as stated.
Fortunately I had a backup windows installation on this PC so I've still been able to use it. It's not a full backup though. It's not fully drivered up. But it just about works.
So how might I figure what is causing the problem?

Look for codes and file names on the blue screen. Then google.

I know for a fact there's no filename listed but there is a code. Obviously. I'll check that later.

I'm guessing it's to do with the drivers for that dvd drive. you could try booting to safe mode on that install of xp, and then disable the dvd in device manager and see if you can boot then.
If that works, then remove that device, download new drivers and then scan for new hardware.
