It is mystifying my friend Duncan (AKA Marasmusine)

Anything to suggest it's a video game character and not from Anime?

Only that he cut the picture out of a games magazine. I seem to associate the image with super play in my head.

Looks a bit like Cassandra/Sophitia from Soul Calibur & Soul Edge.

'Armour' reminds me a little of Chun li (although nothing else does) , I'm sure i have PDF's of every Super Play on my machine somewhere at home so could look on there if no-one else has suggestions (if its a cut out , whats on the other side ?)

It's the guy out of Katamari's sister and she's wearing Chun Li's undercrackers. If it is from a game, I'm guessing Japanese and obscure.

Important clues:

1) It was definitely a games magazine - it was actually from a Cheats & Tips booklet that, gasp!, I pinched from the magazine cover without paying!

2) On the other side of the clipping is a photo of Shigeru Miyamoto, so the game is possibly for a NES or SNES.

3) The magazine this is from was published, I think, some time between 1988 and 1990. Edit: Since neither Super Play nor Nintendo Magazine System were published until 1992, maybe this is wrong. But I'm pretty sure I was only between 12 and 14 years old when I "bagged her".

It could be someone from the Valis games, or Ys, but it is a very generic design. Pretty much every female character in every PC-88 RPG looks like that.

Yip - same place - I definitely have the C&VG's from there and some other magazine collections (Zzap64)

C&VG is about 4 gig and is split into 3 sections (1-20 / 20 - 60 / 60 onwards)

When i went to check its not actually a PDF its a scan of each page as a JPG (i tended to use a comic book reader to view them although there are plenty of tools to make a PDF if you wanted them on an iphone or ipad)

Yes, it is a pretty generic design by late '80s/early '90s standards. Also had an inkling it might've been from the Valis games as well.

Had a look on Hardcore Gaming 101 for the Ys and Valis entries, and there's as yet no visual evidence that the character comes from those games series, but I'll check a few other sources.

IMO issue 42 was one of the last issues before Super Play jumped the shark. It's post-shark-jump phase didn't last long though.

(Hey! Letter of mine in that issue. Cool. Having a letter published in a games magazine used to be such an thrill.)

If it helps I'm convinced she's a paladin. (the general outfit, big P on the front) The pauldrons were directly nicked by blizzard for WoW paladins, I remember having them at some point pre-wrath.

Did it have a moment that could be considered jumping the shark? As I recall, releases just petered out, leaving them to pad increasingly thinner issues, rather than any idea they came up with to ruin things.

Yes, that's a more accurate description of events. Inevitably fizzled out due to the collapse in the Super NES market, but finally lost its edge when Tony Mott left a few issues before the end and became a bit too generic.

If anyone wants specific issues I can upload them (or could burn them to a disk) , I have loads on them on my ipad which is the type of weird magic stuff you would think of as a kid but would not believe would actually exist (yeah see all those books and magazines your salivating over - imagine all of them , for the next X years all on a single thing that weighs less than about 3 of them stuck together and you just swish your finger along to top to change the page)

Thanks for the suggestions though... I've scoured google search image pages of Valis and Ys but haven't really spotted this character or this exact style of art yet.

I do still have 1 invite as i've not heard from WTB (as he asked first I put one aside for him) - i'll message him and check - if he doesnt want it you can have it.

I *may* have got a little ambitious with my first day's torrenting as I'm about half a meg from being banned already! What's worse is no bastard seems to want to seed from me - I'll have to leave my PC on for the next decade at this rate if I ever want my ratio to improve.

Oh well.

If it's anything like The Mixing Bowl there's a list of 'in demand' torrents that can get your ratio up.

Quite, I've done enough seeding for one lifetime.

I obviously cant check the site at the moment , but i also found it was hard to get people to download but they do a system where you can gain ratio by continuing to seed torrents for a period of time rather than a specific amount of data.

I also think there are some golden 'free' torrents which dont count for your download numbers , but do count for your uploads (if theres something in there your vaugly interested in then its 'free' bonuses for your ratio).

Are there still torrent sites where people care about ratios? Shouldn't people get banned for having high ratios as well, as they're preventing people from building up their own ratio.

Edit - unless they're just uploading stuff I guess, rather than endlessly seeding things.

Ratios were one of the reasons I gave up on large scale torrenting. How can you maintain a good ratio when you're just downloading the same as everyone else?

I've only ever seeded while that particular torrent has still been downloading on my end. I don't use any paid-for trackers or anything, mind.
