This adds an interesting element - so far I've only been attacked twice and it was more someone checking out the option rather than a determined effort to steal my resources.
There's an ios game called Clash of Clans that has a similar mechanic. Leads to a tactical struggle between building up offensive to go and steal others' resources, or building up your own defences.
Also, you join a clan with real world people and they can supply you higher level troops than you can currently make.
