As I'm illed and not at work today (I knew that wasn't just a hangover yesterday) I have decided to hack my PS3.
I have typed "hack my PS3" into Google, and I'm going to carry on from there.

Wish me luck!

Here are the instructions

Step 1: Okay, first off, you need to get the official 3.55 firmware on your PS3 using a USB drive. Here it is!
Format a USB drive to FAT32, then create a folder in the root called PS3, then one in that called UPDATE (capitals are important).
Unrar the file above and bang the PS3UPDAT.PUP into the UPDATE folder. Then stick the drive into your PS3, go to System Update, and then "Update via storage media".

Step 2: Once it's done, put that USB drive back into your PC, and replace the PS3UPDAT.PUP with a norty version. Here's one!
Like last time, unrar the file and drop it into the update folder. Back to the PS3!

If the install doesn't work because "you already have this version installed", see this post.

Step 3: Now download this file. These tend to get deleted a lot so if it's vanished and you can't find another, PM me or something.
Stick it on a USB drive, and then choose 'install packages' from the "game" section of the PS3 menu, then install.

Step 4: Go to the PS3 games option in the 'games' menu, then choose "Rogue Warrior" from the list. I said yes to all the things it asked me. You should too.
And there's your backup manager! You can copy those precious games to your PS3 hard drive now.
But if you were sensible and backed up your expensive games to your PC when you got them (ahem) how can you get them to your PS3?

Step 5: Grab this file, and unrar it onto your USB drive. Install it using the Package installer and run it. It will show you the IP address of your PS3.
Fire up IE, type ftp://192.168.my.ip and there's your PS3's internal file system. Click 'page' then 'Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer'.
Make a new directory in dev_hdd0 called GAMES. Copy your games into it.

I am going for kmeaw 3.55. I need to find some USB sticks now, I'd imagine.

[edit]Here are some Sony ones. How fitting :)

It looks to be incredibly easy from what I've seen. I've not yet ascertained how reversible it is or know if Sony will get mad at me and block my PS3 from their network. :S

Blocking the PS3's mac address from the Internet is going to be step 1.

Fortunatly Sony provide all the information you need in this handy screen:

So does this mean you won't be able to play games online anymore?

I'm tempted to do my PS3 as I don't use it for anything else...well, actually... anything at all!

It happens every time, but I'm still always astounded that hacky people don't bother to write even vaguely good documentation.

Yeah, I want an action replay of my Wii hacking; you navigate the terrible docs so I don't have to. Although I'm not convinced I want to take my PS3 offline forever.

Okay, first off, you need to get the official 3.55 firmware on your PS3. As you can see from the photo above, I don't have it, but here it is!
Format a USB drive to FAT32, then create a folder in the root called PS3, then one in that called UPDATE (capitals are important).
Unrar the file above and bang the PS3UPDAT.PUP into the UPDATE folder. Then stick the key into your PS3, go to System Update, and then "Update via storage media".

Come back to your PC and change the folder name from PS£ to PS3 if you are me, and try again.

[EDIT] IGNORE THIS!

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Once it's done, put that USB drive back into your PC, and replace the PS3UPDAT.PUP with a norty version. Here's one!
Like last time, unrar the file and drop it into the update folder. Back to the PS3!

Excellent. I was always tempted to hack my Wii but could never find a decent guide so I gave up.

I'm presuming this guide will allow me to install games straight to the PS3 hard drive so I don't have to risk getting the disks scratched?

It'd be interesting to see what Emulators run like on it... I mean, I don't have enough emulators running in this house! No.. I need more!

Right, assume you're back to just having put the official 3.55 firmware on you PS3.

Download this file, and unrar it all into a folder on your desktop. Unrar/zip all the stuff inside it too, and then delete the compressed files.
Copy your official 3.55 firmware file into the folder, too.

At the end of it, it'll look something like this:

Fire up a command prompt, navigate to the folder you created with all that gumph in, and type
Code:
bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3CFW.PUP patchfile

Move PS3UPDAT.PUP out of the way, so you can rename the PS3CFW.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP.

Use an MD5 checker (here's one!) to make sure the new PS3UPDAT.PUP is 2be5e87a22bf1e7f48e98fcabd38977b .

Crack that into a PS3/UPDATE folder on your USB drive, and update your PS3 again.

If it was possible to rip PS2 games to the PS3 hard drive, I'd probably get one. I know you can install a hard drive on the PS2, but the whole process for that doesn't look straightforward*.

*Well, installing the drive itself looks straightforward, but not ripping games to it.

Nah, I'll do that afterward. Don't ask ;)

Okay, if you get a message saying "You already have this on your system" like what I did, turn your PS3 off, hold down the power button and it will beep and then beep again, let go of the power button, hold down the power button and it will beep and then beep again and eventually it will beep twice quickly, and you can let go of your power button.
Plug in a PS3 controller and choose option 6 to install your norty update. I'll go and see how it's getting on.

After all this, can you install GT5 completely to your hard disk and see if it speeds up the horrendously slow loading times and UI? :D

It won't help, I imagine, as I think it's the bits that are installed from the HDD that are still somehow slow. What I have seen that helps is installing an SSD into the PS3 -- cut loading times to 1/3rd of a HDD. Ruinously expensive though.

I've not found it that bad really, certainly not noticeably worse than similar games. It was horrendous at first but that was because the servers were overloaded, even then disconnecting from PSN sorted it.

It's the flashing GT logo that shows for 3-5 seconds between each... and... every... menu... that gets my goat. It makes the "find race, skip through car dealers looking for car, skip to tuning shop to upgrade car, go back to race to check requirements, back to tuning shop to tune some more, then finally play" cycle utterly torturous.

Success!

Okay, now download this file. These tend to get deleted a lot so if it's vanished and you can't find another, PM me or something.
Stick it on a USB drive, and then choose 'install packages' from the "game" section of the PS3 menu, then install.

Which reminds me, I did actually dust down and box up my wheel to bring with me when I dropped C back at school in January, but I literally couldn't fit it in the car due to having C and a friend with her, Roz and the three dogs. Even with the roofbox on the girls were buried under various bags! I'm down in three or so weeks so can drop it off then if you still want it.

Go to the Rogero Manager option under games, then choose "Rogue Warrior" from the list. I said yes to all the things it asked me.
And there's you backup manager! You can copy those precious games to your PS3 hard drive now.

But if you were sensible and backed up your expensive games to your PC when you got them (ahem) how can you get them to your PS3?

Keep watching...
