Ooh, we'll all be queueing out the door for these I reckon. It's nothing but PSP this and PSP that on here.

I read that it won't use UMDs but another, probably proprietary media...

Great.

'Next Generation Portable'? Catchy name.

Quote:
The NGP boasts a five inch 960 x 544 OLED touchscreen, rear touch pads, six axis motion control, a front camera, a rear camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, and GPS.

The rear touch pads thing sounds a bit odd.

Depends on how thick it is, and the comfortable way to hold it I suppose. I think they could work quite well, possibly better than shoulder buttons on a hand held.

I heard a staff-guy in EB telling a customer that Sony 'own 3D' just the other day. Then he phoned up another store to try and find out if any of the boxes for the 360slim had 3D stickers on them, by pretending to be a customer... but then obviously got rumbled.

Not really too relevant really, maybe like the PSP2 roflz

twin analogue nubbins though. pretty much essential for most modern games. A much better move than fucking about with a stylus if you're going to be releasing 'proper' games like AssCreed or whatever.

My issue with the 3DS is that it seems to be focused on doing what a 360/PS3 can do. The PSP2 could aim for the exact same market and dominate it because it'll control properly.

Not buying either, mind.

From what I can make out, it's a codename. Odds are it's final name will have PlayStation in it somewhere.

Aye, codename.

It will probably be PSP2, maybe something else.

PSP2, riding on the coattails of the massive success of the original.

Anyway, I'm sure it will do well against the iPod Touch and iPhone. Those 59p apps sure are unattractive. (Sub: Please check.)

It's hilarious how much we've accurately known about this big secret project for over a year. At least it has two nubs - now we can actually play 3D games on it properly. However, who gives a shit honestly?

Actually, I do genuinely use mine a fair bit from time to time, though mostly for emulators to be fair.

Erm... I'm actually a wee bit interested in this. :S It does look like everything the original PSP should've been and possibly a bit more.

My PSP usage is erratic. Sometimes I don't use it for months, and when I do, I use it for emulation.

Sure they have. What you can't tell from that picture is that it's five and a half feet wide, you control each of the nubs with an outstretched arm and prod at the buttons with a special headwand. Or else you can use the camera function and put it on the floor of the bus/train and dance around in front of it and shout voice commands.

I've been looking out for one on Ebay as they seem to be getting cheaper now. I want the slim & lite version though - the Go can bugger off.

I don't really see the point of handhelds trying to do what full-sized consoles do though. I don't want to play an FPS game on a handheld for example, I want games more suited to handhelds, like Zoo Keeper.

I have periods of using it. I actually spend more time filling it with the latest firmwares, emulators and roms instead of playing anything.

That said, the iPod Touch has completely killed that for me. Although the iPod is useless for anything that needs a dpad, there are plenty of great games that don't go down that route at all. I'd much rather play something like Sand Slides on the iPod than some compromised version of Saints Row.

I did update my brother-in-law's PSP the other day though. Must have gone through seven CFWs to get it up to date. Then it turned out the analog nub was stuck so I just loaned him my PSP on a sort of 'give it back whenever' type basis.

Commercially it's certainly facing an uphill struggle, but technically there's a lot to like there. The Android/PS3/PSP2 cross-platform gaming with cloud syncing support is a really, really good idea. I await with interest to see how Sony will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this time.

Games and UMDs, not so much. But they definitely had no problems shifting the hardware.

I hope Namco Bandai produce an updated Ridge Racer launch title for this machine; if they do, I'm so buying one, just for that reason alone. (Yep, I am such a total RR fanboy saddo).

Looks pretty nifty.

Ridge Racer made me buy a PSP. I doubt it would make me buy a PSP2. I have an ipod touch now which satisfies many gaming needs. What it doesn't, the DS does.

I really hope more adventures come out for the ipod. That's what I like best. Things like Cause of Death and Broken Sword. More Phoenix Wright stuff please. Oh hang on this is about PSP2 no the ipod. Sorry.

Phoenix Wright got an update on the iThing this week and I hoped it was going to be an update to a 'coming soon' screen or something, but alas it was a minor bugfix.

I want a PSP to have a portable copy of Outrun 2.

This PSP2 seems to have learnt little from the failings of the Go and the original PSP. It is interesting that the PSP had only one nub intentionally, to force developers away from lazy ports. The same reason the GBA didn't get 4 face buttons. And like the GBA all it did was mean that the lazy ports controlled badly.

So it is interesting that they have accepted that.

I'm more interested in this playstation phone. The best chance Sony has is to offer a third phone platform. Using android, but forked to prevent fragmentation.

If you do get one for this, try to get hold of one with a custom firmware installed, so you can ramp up the CPU to it's full 333MHz speed. Drains the battery faster, but massively improves the framerate. Outrun 2 PSP is a terrific port - that, Wipeout Pulse and Sid Meier's Pirates! were pretty much the only proper PSP games I ever play on mine.

I'm an unashamed Sony fanboy and PS3 user, I fancy a bit of PSP2/PS3 integration and all that malarkey. I'm prepared to wait for the Sony hardware, plus RR isn't out yet anyway.

Ah, that was more in reference of you linking to a vid of 3DS Ridge Racer. :) (Which, whilst not looking Earth-shattering, certainly looks a step up from Ridge Racer DS, which is mildly shocking in a negative way. Gameplay vid of RR3D here.)

Be surprised if there wasn't an RR game for the PSP2 very early in the system's life. And, hey, it's been just over four years since the most recent Ridge Racer. :nerd:

Get an ipod touch and have a portable copy of Outrun in the form of Final Freeway. Yes I know it's not quite Outrun 2 but still...

Catching up on all this from yesterday and from what I can see here the *big* news on this is the software rather than the hardware.

Specifically something they just showed the title of.

COD

So , Call of Duty , online multiplayer , on a portable with (in the US 3G or 4G connectivity)

If they can do that well - they will sell silly numbers of them.

I similary find pretty much any hand held to cripple my hands. But at least they have an excuse in terms of being small, as compared to the dualshock. I have yet to get any problems with phone games, but so far none have really grabbed me for long enough to be a problem.
