China to merge cities to make one giant city with a population of around that currently in the USA. The surface area will be twice as big as Wales. They are going to do this, I'd like to think, because they fucking can, but it's got to do more with the idea that "the residents can travel around freely and use the health care and other facilities in the different areas...spread industry and jobs more evenly across the region and public services will also be distributed more fairly".

Image
Here's a map.

This is all going to cost, MaliA, I hear you saying, just how much?

"FuckHowMuch?!?" is the figure.
Well, £685 billion over the next 5 years, with £300 billion on the high speed (150mph)rail link and a mere £70 billion on transort links.

They think that over the next 6 years they will do 150 major infrastructure projects plumbing water, 'leccy, telecoms and stuff like that between the current cities, then building a rail link to Hong Kong.

Downsides are pollution, fuck tons of it, summary justice dispensed by a man with knowledge electronically implanted into his brain, and the fact that the city is TWICE THE SIZE OF WALES.

*goes willingly*

Must Serve Machine.

Seriously though, even the smallest city on that map has roughly the same population as Manhattan (I said roughly).

Just how many Chinesers do we need?

Denied. The article clearly says a current 42m, with a projected future maximum of 260m.

it's a bit of an administrative trick though isnt,, brussels is either 100.000 or 1,5 million, in this definition i live in the Randstad, 6 million people.. only just a bit further...

didn't they already do this somewhere in middle china though, creating a 30 million city?

I know one or two people down that way, so I reckon it's at least 45.

The joke was to deliberately miss the point of the City of London figure (as opposed to Greater London), since the discussion leading up to it was about such figures being dependent on what you define as the "city".

Half of them are dancing on the chimney tops, and jumping into chalk drawings is a Hell of a space saver.

Most of the area is taken up with a hollow bronze sculpture of Davpaz's head as well.
Odd choice of deity but that's the Chinese for you.

Dong is the word
It's got groove it's got meaning
Dong is the time, is the place, is the motion
Dong is the way we are feeling

Lets face it, they didn't have a choice. When a giant head like that appears on the horizon, you've got to assume it's supernatural. And make miniature scale models of it to appease it.

They tried, it seems. However, looking up those cities' names on Wikipedia sugggests that some aren't empty at all.

Clearly, Wikipedia is an enemy of the state.

It's like they typed FUNDS over and over and suffered the earthquakes just to build a huge city as quickly as possible, never mind if none of it develops.
