Strange situation (work based)

We have a customer who has a pc and a modem and 2 pieces of software.

software 1 - uses AT commands to put the modem into a state where it can answer calls and transfer data to a remote computer

software 2 - is pcanywhere, some crap software to remotly control a pc, this uses the windows modem drivers to talk to the modem.

I can dial in remotely using pcanywhere to this pc fine. However when I try and use software 1, it does not pickup.

Now I use software on my pc with the same make and model of modem and it works fine, with the same settings, so the software is fine.

The modem has been swapped out, and the phone line has been checked by BT and it is fine (and pcanywhere works)

so what gives? Can anyone think of a setting that might make AT based comms not work, when windows drivers do?

Thanks

Malc

Hold on, your dialling in to a PC via an internet connection via the modem, then want to use some other software while you are dialled in to control that very same modem? That isn't going to work is it?

No, I drop the line to them before starting to use the other software.

This process is supposed to run overnight after midnight, but can run it manually as well.

The logs don't show any connection to the modem at all (to all intents, it looks like no one dialled in, despite the site reporting they can hear the modem making noises)

Oh right, you're not trying to do the both at the same time, that makes more sense :)

Dunno then :D

Two potential answers:
1) The initialisation string in program 1 is just wrong. Try the most basic "ATS0=1" - auto answer mode and see if that works.

2) It's to do with the control signals (DTR should be held high to allow auto-answer) and how different serial ports handle them. Some modems can be configured differently to work around this - try adding AT&D0 to the initialisation if you can't solve it otherwise.

Yes, I used to run a BBS.

Ooh,

this is the string I'm using

ATE0V1X4&S1&C1&D2\N0%C0&K0&R1S0=1

which works on about 3,000 other sites fine!

It's a multitech modem (56k)

Quite possibly the DTR thing then - try changing that D2 to a D0.
