The Pilot

On April 21, 2009, an uncut and unrated extended version of the pilot was released on DVD, along with commentary, deleted scenes and video blogs. It will also be available as a download through select online destinations, including iTunes, Xbox Live, Zune, and The Pirate Bay.

Get to it, colonials! It's the long one!

Just clicked through it in media player - it would indeed appear to be bloody amazing, though I don't recommend anyone do so as there are some very visually stimulating SPOILERY things from about a third of the way onwards... and I'm not even talking about Polly Walker.

I'm watching Caprica in a version that is nearly 2 hours long. It's difficult to keep watching as it's often terribly plodding. There's only so much 'significant talking' you can take really. Well I can only take so much. But then that's dramas for you.

I'm 25 minutes in now. It is... wonderful. Not exactly pacey, no, but I'm at the scene where

The girl who didn't get on the train is in the dead girl's room using the Virtual Boy Advance to talk to the telepathic 1:! avatar the dead girl made for herself

...and I think I've already got the major plot point figured out.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I know there's cloning or something, and Stoltz is going to make cylons which are proto centurions, but I think the reason Cylons rebel is down to what is on that dead kid's computers, and it involves the suicide emo boy's stuff as well - Stoltz has his cylons read and is missing ingredient X and so he dumps the work his dead daughter was doing into the kernel for GNU/Cylon OS 0.82 <beta> and when they become properly hive-mind self aware they got all menstrual over the one god business and the humans are fundementally evil (i.e. the simulation of the snuff-nightclub with the fit lezzers) business as well, accepting these as fundemental tenets of their instantly necessary moral code.

I can't wait to see if the next hour and a bit proves or disproves my predictions, because if I'm wrong, then I sincerely hope the writers have something even cooler in mind, and if I'm right, then that's cool. If I'm not sure come the end of the pilot whether I'm correct or not, then that's locked me into at least the first season when it airs.

Visually it is brilliant, it looks like Galactica in the Caprica sequences (duh) but you know how things can get different with spinoffs. Secondly every idea it has hinted at or addressed so far...

monotheism/polytheism, dead relatives, tech, people you know but might just be imagining are evils, such as Polly Walker's fuckable and lovely counsellor

... resonates nicely with Galactica. They aren't the same show but they've the same DNA. George Lucas, I'm talking to you, and the writers of Enterprise, Hannibal Rising and the rest... THIS IS HOW YOU DO A PREQUEL. After only 25 minutes, this is how you do it.

I can tell you how it ends... 2.5 great seasons, the "boxing episode", picking up at the end of season 3, a good start to season four... all ultimately leading to a piss poor ending, the highlight of which being that Hera's destiny, as the first Human-Cylon hybrid, is to cavort with monkies.

Right, the first proper episode is available for download. Steady though, check comments on torrents, because as usual the numbering is fucked, only 1 proper episode in. I explain, here are the three things you can possibly download now...

1: The Pilot, released on DVD some months ago, is very long and sets everything up nicely. Has boobs. Will be called the pilot (and probably DVDRip if you want a good quality version).

2: The pilot, broadcast just over a week ago in the US, it's the same pilot that came out on DVD but without boobs and some establishing shots and bits added instead. Is called the pilot on some torrents but also episodes 1&2 leading me to think they sliced it to make it look like 2 eps. Obviously if you are watching the pilot and there are TV overlays and idents then it's this one.

3: The first proper episode, called episode 2 by some uploaders and episode 3 by others. It has a title though, Rebirth, so look for that.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU GET THE HD VERSIONS, IT LOOKS WONDERFUL.

Obtain, watch and discuss. Cracking series, this.

I haven't yet finished watching Battlestar Galactica.

Will watching this spoil that for me at all?

Watching all of BS:G should be top of your list of 'things to do' whether this existed or not.

Ignoring Craster should be second. Third should be "breathing".

I am asking this question again.

Whilst I will eventually watch the rest of BG, Caprica is taking up space on my V+ box, so if watching it spoils nothing for my BG viewing experience then I'll watch it. If it would indeed spoil things then I shall not.

If you are halfway through BSG then you already have a good idea of what the Cylons are in and of themselves, and Caprica won't deal with anything on a larger scale than the week-to-week plot developments in BSG give away anyhow. There's only four episodes up, you'll get some background on how and why the Cylons got to be what they are during the first couple of seasons of Galactica but you won't get spoilers for anything in the final season and a half, nor the movies. Watch the Galactica movies in order of when they were released, relative to the series thoguh, as that's how it was intended.

But crack on with BSG because you've got one or two episodes you'll need to wade through but ten times as many you'll be glad you made the effort to reach. Whatever the differing opinions on the finale, that show is about the journey so much that the destination hardly seemed to matter when the end came and that's why it is so good - and unless there's a massive shift in the scale and perspective of Caprica in the next few episodes, it won't spoiler BSG. What you will need to do however is start watching Caprica again from the start as soon as you finish BSG including 'The Plan' - because knowing what you then know and knowing also what is still a mystery, it'll add colour and scale to the viewing.

Just finished ep 4 myself, for BSG fans there is one audio squeeeee moment just before

The bazillion episodes of Caprica on our V+ box has made the missus amenable to watching BSG again.

We're now nearing the end of Season Two, and I must say, the episodes we watched last night were far better than the shit that went on in the middle of the series.

Which reminds me...

Where can I buy Series 3 & 4 of BSG for cheapness?
