This looks aces. Basically, make a spaceship, and deploy it into battle. You don't get to tell it what to do once it's gone (you can tell it to escort other ships or whatever before it's deployed), so it's all about the building, and huge, huge explosions.

That the sort of thing I should love. I am keeping a close eye on the dev site.

Isn't there a game like that where you design creatures in the sea, and they eat things and get bigger?

Ooooh. About half my time in Galactic Civilizations II was spent fiddling around with the awesome and entirely gratuitous spaceship creator.

The other half of my time was spent thinking up names for my new ships. The main battlegroup in my first game was made up of the HMS Did You Spill Earth's Pint?, the HMS Suck It Alien Boy, the HMS War Bastard and the HMS Don't Point That At My Planet.

Reminds me of playing Sid Meier's Pirates! - many an adventure has been had by Captain Skullbugger and his ship, the Ocean Bastard.

If it were on the eggbox I'd be like so totally all over it. As it is, it probably wouldn't run on my PC.

Good news everybody! Release imminent, apparently.

There will very very shortly be a 'release' version of GSB, and very soon afterwards, a demo.
This will probably provoke a lot of questions, so here is my first stab at the answers:

Does this mean the game is finished?

It means the game is in a finished state, playable and is properly for sale, yes. It means people can review the game without thinking it's still in beta. It means that Positech (Me!) consider this to be a finished game, rather than an on-going beta test.

Is this the end of new features?

No. Definitely not. I already have stuff (like the converging lasers thing) in the pipeline to add in later updates. There is a ton of stuff I'd love to add (if the game sells!). It *does* mean that updates will be less frequent, but probably be more feature-related rather than focusing on bug fixing, and possibly bigger in scope.

What will the price be?

$22.99 is the planned dollar price for the final game. That means if you are on the fence, you need to buy it NOW to get it cheaper.

Will I need to re-download the whole game?

No. A patch that takes current copies to 'release 1.22' will be exactly the same as the final game, although the word 'beta' will be removed from the full installer. You can always re-download the final game if you prefer.

When will there be a mac port?

In due course. It's not been started yet, but it is planned.

When will the game be in stores?

I do not currently have a retail deal for the game. I recommend buying the game online anyway.

Will the challenges get wiped?

I see no reason to destroy a lot of the challenges, and the date sort will allow people to know they aren't playing against older challenges. The survival scores will get reset on release day though :D

Will there be a sequel or expansion packs?

I should hope so! These decisions are sadly more commercial than creative, so obviously it remains to be seen if this game is profitable!. I'd love to add more content to the game for people who feel that four fleets just isn't enough. That stuff takes a while to do though. What this space blah blah :D

Hmm, explain why.

(Obv, I know it will be, but I know little about this game beyond the ZOoooomEEwowPEWPEWPEWSchkkkkrrrBANG! type theme.)

People who have "pre-ordered" (in inverted commas because they take the cash now) have had access to the beta versions for some time.

Actually, I got a free copy of the first beta because I have been so enthusiastic about it.

This does look lovely, and Cliffski seems a decent sort, and tries to do things that are a little unusual. But nnnghh, I really can't justify paying that much for any game right now (though it certainly seems a decent price, I've got to watch the budget). Good luck to him, though!

Ahh, actually I meant 'explain why it's pretty good'. Just fishing for a mini-review, was all.

I bought a copy of the beta straight away.

I stopped playing it straight away as well :( It just didn't grab me.

Heh. I think cliffsky is awesome, and is very outspoken in a good way.

I don't particularly enjoy his games though, they're not for me.

I'm glad lots of people enjoy them though.

Edit: If you're having problems with it, email him and he'll probably get back to you within 24 hours.

It's not the game's fault - I bought it on Impulse, which won't let me download an installer. It only downloads the game's files directly, which is useless to me as I can't get my gaming PC online. It's fine, I just have to wait some more.

I do have a great deal of respect for Cliffsky, I have to say. He takes chances, gives his customers respect and the benefit of the doubt, and had the stones to take a big gamble in challenging his own views on things like piracy.

Bought this earlier. Really don't like it. The ship design stuff is pretty amateurish compared to stuff from a decade ago, like the Masters of Orion games, and as that's pretty much all there is, it's a big thumbs-down from me.

That would be terribly good of him, but I can wait for now. Games are fighting for HD space (and time, now that I think of it) as it is.

Have you tried Kudos 2? It's very accessible (and, dare I say it, a bit casual) but also quite the time-sink if it clicks with you.
