Gang, I've just been informed that a job application has progressed to interview stage. However, as it is very far away they want to do a telephone interview.

Now, I've never done a telephone interview; and my last formal interview was about four and a half years ago.

Has anyone got any tips they'd like to share? Or maybe just talk about their experiences?

I am both excited and really quite nervous, this is quite a big opportunity for me.

Cheers, guys.

I read this when I was googling for tips. I think it would help, although I'd have to try and stop myself from pacing/wandering or fiddling with things(!), as it's going to have to be at a time when I will be at home.

It will also depend on the job.

I've done lots of telephone interviews in the past (given not taken) and because the role was dealing with customers on the phone you could tell a lot from how they conducted themselves , how they explained things / got their ideas and details across.

As mentioned standing up is a good idea , as is mobility if you can do it (not pacing but not being stationary) , remember to block out any other noise in the area - and if possible use a landline (bad / dodgy mobile phone signals make it painful for both sides)

If you do have a bad line dont be afraid to ask for things to be stopped and started up again.

Oh and make sure your ready for the call (i've had plenty of no-shows as well)

Remember its sometimes easier to waffle on the phone because you cant see their body language , and apart from that the usual stuff about interviews - be prepared and make sure you know the role and the company your dealing with

Yeah, either 8am or 9pm were the choices given to me. I'm inclined to go for the 9pm one as it gives me plenty of time to get home from work, relax a bit and have some dinner.

There's no disclaimer on the advert to say that the actual image quality will be shit.

It's rather akin to having arcade screenshots on the back of a Speccy game with nothing to say its the arcade version. Rather like Elite did with Space Harrier!

It's the famously awful GX4000 advert.

If one of LordSurAlun's apprentices came up with it, he'd have had them set on fire and then dumped in the Thames attached to some breeze blocks.

They should be calling me in just over an hour. I'm a mixture of excited, and nervous. I've been thinking about things I want to know, questions I'd like to ask them. Trying to anticipate what they will ask me is much harder, however. Man, I hope I don't slip up anywhere.

I've been trying to read some papers, but I hate scientific papers, they're so dry. Thing is, I want to make out like I have a bit of background knowledge of the area; but I do find speaking to someone that is really into it quite intimidating (one of the interviewers is a professor, head of dept and vice head of the institute - so way smarter than I).

Phew, 45 minute telephone call from Australia - I'm glad they phoned me. I feel quite upbeat about it, we seemed to get on well and I didn't embarrass myself. Few questions I felt I could have fielded better, but that always happens; and I asked some good questions. Five other candidates, though - and it sounds like a decision won't be made for a couple of weeks yet :S

Thanks for the word-ings guys :luv:

I think, and I may be wrong, that it was Amstrad going by the Amstrad logo on the bottom of the picture of the Amstrad phone there.

Admittedly, I hadn't watched the clip, the still picture made me remember things.

Well, I didn't get offered that job. I didn't hear anything for quite a while, so I chased them up and found out. It would've been nice to have been told when they had made their decision, but nevermind.

Nevermind, because between that interview and the waiting I had actually been chased and unexpectedly interviewed for a slightly better job, albeit a bit further out from the city, and offered it just a few days later.

I now have to fill in the paperwork to apply for an Australian visa :S

Thanks guys. I have to admit that the thought of moving so far away has turned from 'an exciting daydream' to more 'daunting, bit scary (but still exciting)' now that it is closer to becoming a reality.

Awesome! I hear working in Australia involves opening tinnies, going down the beach and throwing a shrimp on the barbie.

A colleague from my work moved out to Perth a couple of years ago, having never even visited the country before. Bit daunting but I believe he's enjoying it.

The visas were granted earlier this week, so now it's time to write my letter of resignation.

Awesomely, I have 4 weeks holiday to take and they are happy for me to take it during my notice period, so I'm going to have all of June off work but still get paid, and start out there in the beginning of July :metul:

We fly out tonight.... The thought of an almost 24 hour flight has never been so appealing. No boxes to carry, calls to make, lofts to crawl around in, furniture to shift; just lovely, beautiful isolation.

It's a shame I couldn't come out for another bezzie meet, but when we will be heading back over from time to time so can try and coordinate something.

Of course, if you guys want to have a meet in Australia.... I'll get the beers in.
